Maybe, especially with tools like Eclipse which do the compiling for you in the background, while you are editing. So you don't even issue make (or whatever build tool you use, let that be scons or ant). >> So you were lucky that the things did fit together. With the "quickly slammed together and then abandoned" feeling for whatever module you look at ;-). If Google fixes some problems with older Android releases, it's typically that they introduce an entire new API or so... but they try hard to keep backwards compatibility. If you just change the API level, your program stops to work, because now the newer API has other bugs to work around ;-). > The board I used was sort of like a small desktop computer. > It ran pretty much the same software. Yes, Gforth had a cooperative multitasker for quite some time. The preemtive is a plug-in replacement, i.e. it uses the same words to create tasks and such. There are new things in it which the cooperative didn't have, like locks and the event-style messaging. > Anyway, either of those is a case for GC. Say you allocate a string > with a blob of text. Probably by reference counting. I haven't seen that sort of data flow not, the usual data flow is similar to a pipeline. E.g. one process reads data from a MKV file, converts it into MTS, and another process consumes the MTS. With this single producer:consumer relation, it's easy: The producer allocates, the consumer frees. If I would need reference counting, I would very likely put that into the pass-by-reference routine, so that there is a small central place where the reference counting happens. >> the algorithm to restart a crashed application is to ask it, > > How do you "ask it"? The context is a bare metal, cooperative > multitasker, with one of the tasks in a hard loop. Hardware reset > by a watchdog seems like the main approach. Usually, a program has some way to respond to a query. Let's say you have a cooperative multitasker Forth with one task is still interpreting commands from the serial port. So you send a return, and expect an "ok". If you get your "ok", the Forth system is still up and running. Hardware watchdogs work somewhat different, there, the program itself polls the watchdog. This can be troublesome, as people tend to add a watchdog poll if their part of the program gets killed by the watchdog. >> The debugging effort went more into finguring out what commands I >> actually want to send in which order, > > Right, the JSON approach is just throw all the data into a blob, parse > it at the other side, and then pick out the relevant fields as needed. Yes, with the JSON approach, your remote Go playing robot would probably get the complete board (with locations where white and black stones are located) each round, and then has to keep a copy of the previous board to figure out what moves to make. My Go robot doesn't even know that it is playing Go. It just knows how to move stones/balls around. >> On the launchpads, you would rather write small programs. > > The MSP430 launchpad is small, the ARM launchpads are bigger (256k of > program flash and 32k of ram for the one I have, I think). Yes, the ARM launchpads are for medium sized programs. No Linux, no Python. Yes, but this suspicion about eval is that the code is data thing is not a bidirectional relation. >> strings: They tend to end up somewhere in a named variable, anyways, >> so I just keep them there, and have operations to add/insert stuff. > > Sounds hazardous in concurrent programs. Make sure the data and the program "belong" together. E.g. by using objects. In general, I would advice to write concurrent programs with producer/consumer relations, so that you don't have multiple writes (multiple readers are ok). >> I've already got my successful Forth entry 11 years ago, rank 10 of >> 168 (and IIRC, I was the only single-person entry in the top-ten): >> http://bernd-paysan.de/icfp.html > > Wow, that's pretty neat, congrats.
