It becomes less of an advantage and almost a drag, when the target is powerful enough that it is basically the same as the desktop. Then you can develop on the desktop directly without having to mess with the target (clunky box, cables, peripherals etc). except to make sure once in a while that your stuff actually works on it. In my case it meant I could sometimes develop at home on a PC, without having to take home the target hardware.
