The 128K figure comes from the MSP430F5xxx series, where the low 64K address space also maps peripherals and SRAM, up to about 28K, so there is only 36K of Flash that can be used for executing programs, without resorting to long branches and calls. > I found a neat way of aligning Forth addresses to even values, that allowed addressing up to 128K with only a 20% drop in Forth execution speed. > Also 128K is twice the current 64K that I have in an 8051, of which I use about 60K, but a lot of this is fonts and help screen text. > > The 8051 programs that I do tend to have a handful of tasks - printer, serial port, LCD+keypad, analog processing - using interupts where possible. > I think that this counts as "pretty complicated" compared to the usual C-based programs that fit into 64K - usually this would be done in an ARM with 256K Flash and a pre-emptive RTOS. > > For the New Project, I want to upgrade, but without losing the simplicity of the old hardware. When you talk about fonts and text, would this be served well by off chip memory like a serial Flash? How large is the executable program? My CPU designs separate the program and data memory and don't even include something like Flash because you don't typically have that in FPGAs. But it is just a matter of adding external memory to the memory map and providing an interface to the external chip. -- Rick
