You brought up the clock speed so I asked how it compared to some commodity ARM parts. I'm not particularly an ARM fanboy but I happen to have a bit of familiarity with those products so they were the first ones I thought of. For example, the STM32F Discovery board has a Cortex M4F running at something like 200 mhz, with a megabyte of program flash and 192k of ram, all for 15 dollars. I guess these are artificial benchmarks, but let's say we want to write Forth code to solve the first 10 or so Euler problems. Then run the code (misc version modified to support the misc target if needed) on an ARM and a softcore and compare the energy consumption. A harder issue to pin down is that Howerd wanted 128k of program flash, which means a chip able to run some pretty complicated code by MCU standards. Now think of yourself developing that much code for a Misc core with its limitations, compared to a software Forth for a 32-bit processor.
