I can't comment on Bernd's situation, but I will comment on the "kill signal" issue. In the first place, you have to distinguish between a project in development and one in the field. During development, you can expect there to be bugs, and some of them may cause a task to hang up. Actually, in my experience, that's one of the less-frequent problems you encounter; the most common cause of a crash in development is a stack over- or underflow. Early on, of course, you just mutter something under your breath and do a reset. Sometimes we have a timer interrupt do a reset, or some similar strategy. If you have tasks in conflict over a shared resource, you can manually clear that from the console task. It's quite easy to set up some oversight from the console to watch task behavior (e.g. looking at variables being changed, watch their stacks, etc.). A project that's going to operate remotely in the field has to go through a more rigorous testing field than one that will function where people can press a reset button occasionally. Assuming this is done, the main thing you have to fear is malfunctioning hardware. So, part of your design process has to assume that most anything your system depends on can malfunction, and you design in appropriate responses. Truthfully, having worked with the FORTH, Inc. multitasker (I can't speak for other cooperative multitaskers) for over 30 years, in a very wide variety of applications, I have never encountered a situation that led us to consider a basic change in the algorithm. There are certain rules that have to be followed, but they are simple and clear-cut. For example, all I/O must pause the task. Ideally, the task simply sleeps until an interrupt occurs and wakes it, but sometimes polling is ok. That includes "virtual" I/O, such as writing to a memory-mapped display. It is extremely rare for a task in a real-time application to go for very long without some kind of I/O! And if there is some cpu-bound activity, you can insert some PAUSEs to keep things moving. As I mentioned recently, we do have a very different multitasking facility in SwiftForth, because it's necessary to "play nice" with the OS and non-Forth tasks. I don't know how the Linux and OSX ones work (haven't looked), but they may well be modified, as well. But for bare-metal standalone systems, it's really hard to beat our traditional tasker for maximizing the number of cycles available to the application and minimizing the overhead, with good performance and security for all.
