It's not possible (because of issues like GC) to write real-time programs in the usual versions of Java, Python, etc. I'm saying, though, that we've entered an era where moderate-cost embedded computers are not much different from desktop computers (they even run the same OS's). So when realtime performance is not required (this is the case for many applications), programming these more powerful embedded devices in Java or Python is quite practical. This has come up on the newsgroup before: the above situation puts Forth at a serious disadvantage compared to today's popular languages, where the extensive libraries are included with the language or available on the net, instead of being unique to specific programmers and projects. Today's programmers often juggle multiple projects or (for whatever reasons) move around between projects. So it's a big win that all experienced Python programmers are familiar with the most important Python libraries, and similarly for Ruby, Java, etc. Language communities in fact compete on the variety of libraries that are widely available for their pet language. Forth seems to be insular by comparison.
