In that case (using extra words with closely defined behavior), there will be no problems. I was afraid the demand would come to reproduce source from compiled code. [..] >>Whatever you get, it will be a lie. > Why do you write that? You can get tokens and/or compiled code for a certain definition. SEEing that compiled code tells you nothing about what the code will look when it is used in another definition. Also, SEE of a kernel word gets you the code that would be interpreted, not necessarily the one that is compiled (there are other tricks for that). The only way to be relatively sure is to compile the word that you want to execute and disassemble it to see where it goes. >>SEE fuu will have no relation to foo . >>Some (future) systems will eventually garbage collect foo and bar, or may >>refuse to show code at all ( unless you do ' foo :-) > FOO and BAR can always be called from the text interpreter, so they > are not garbage as far as GC is concerned. Hanno Schwalm is extremely fond of executables and SAVE-SYSTEM . It is possible that a rebooted system does not have references to dead code anymore. >>In iForth >> >>FORTH> : foo 3 + ; ok >>FORTH> see foo >>Flags: TOKENIZE, ANSI >>: foo 3 + ; ok > Well, there you have it! The problem starts when you want something different. >>FORTH> see fuu >>Flags: ANSI >>$01405640 : fuu >>$0140564A push 5 b# >>$0140564C jmp .+10 ( $0113A072 ) offset NEAR >This could be decompiled to >: fuu 5 . ; As we say in the Netherlands 'put a pair of wheels under grandma and we have a trolleybus.' > or the Forth system might retain some intermediate forth (like VFX > does for inlining) and use that for decompiling. I am sure VFX does not keep the intermediate code for all high-level words in that million-line application they support. In iForth there is no intermediate code whenever the word stops being a candidate for inlining. Doing I/O is a reason to not ever being inlined. > The question is which capability clients of such an introspection > interface would prefer? For some it may not matter, others may prefer > staying close to the source, some may prefer something close to the > executed code. Unfortunately, the *only* demand I remember in this direction is for the feature I absolutely can *not* support: tell the name of a word when given the address of its compiled code. (That's in brew, which you helpfully promoted to a standard benchmark). >>We could use LOCATE , but LOCATE fuu wouldn't work (console definition). > I don't think the Forth source code is easier to handle than the > native code, on the contrary (as the VFX source inliner demonstrated): > source code depends on quite a bit of system state that we probably > don't want to deal with in the client of such an introspection > interface. As I said, the only dump that doesn't lie is the disassembler output. But with LOCATE I see the stack arguments and a few lines of comments, which is most often exactly what is needed. -marcel
