Eclipse does a good job at showing you the data in the form the computer sees it - as the data types and objects you have defined. That's not necessarily the form you want to see them. Example: The image recognition I did for our LinuxTag demo classifies points into three categories: board, white, black. The best way to visualize that is IMHO to draw a rectangle with pixel in the colors of board, white, and black. Can Eclipse do that? I did some other annotations, like drawing those parts brighter which were actually used to detect the white and black balls. That's a small program in Forth, it's needed to debug the classification algorithm. You can do that in Java as well, but that's not how people usually debug a Java program. They use the tools Eclipse provides them. Another example: The primary debugging tool for my net2o flow control algorithm is drawing a graph with bandwidth and delays. Looking at that graph gives me a good picture how stable and responsive the algorihm is. This all is additional work on top of writing the program: Writing the tools to visualize the information you need to debug it. For sure, you can do that in Java as well.
