The most popular competitor to the Apple II was the Commodore C64: Affordable, but with limits for expansion. The IBM PC wasn't affordable; when it was introduced, it was about 8500 DM ($3000), the C64 was 1500 DM, the Apple II about 3500 DM. Considering that even the C64 is about 2000€ of today's purchasing power, the IBM PC was simply out of question. Note that the first IBM PC had just 64k byte of memory; i.e. no more than the much cheaper C64. Writing a 16 bit Forth for it when it was fresh on the market wasn't stupid at all. Using it five years later probably was stupid. Most nerds I know either started with the C64 or a bit later with Atari ST or Amiga; the transition to the PCs was hard, and until Linux became useful, people resisted; despite the fact that both Atari and Commodore were falling behind. The home computers had some problems in companies, because the image of these computers was "gaming". Yes, that's what they were built for, and today, nobody would look down on a gamer computer - gamer PCs are the most expensive and powerful desktop PCs you can buy. But back then, for real serious business work, you needed an 80x24 character display, not some graphics.
