It had two Z80 boards for the actual motor control, the rest was done with an Atari ST. The computer science department had suggested buying two VAXes instead. For industrial production in a pharmaceutical plant, Ewald Rieger had also used Atari STs with bigForth, and then ported bigForth to a VME bus computer (it didn't have an operating system underneath). The only problem with the Atari was that the monitors had quality problems, and didn't last long. So the thing you can't imagine is something *I* have seen. And there was a decision to go with bigForth and the Atari ST instead of some PC with a PC Forth, and the reason was that the PCs of the pre-386 era were toys. Yes, the C64 was designed as toy for kids; and the Atari ST wasn't much different (after all, it was from the same team). They added the best CPU they could get for a reasonable price, as much RAM as possible, good graphics for what was affordable, and the development time was really short.
