By far, what I find the strangest about comp.lang.forth, is the way
people steer around reality. Only once have I seen anybody admit that
16-bit x86 PolyForth was limited to 64K as described above. That
person obviously didn't know that it was taboo to admit this, and he
blurted it out accidentally. Almost invariably, people will say that
the 80386 version of PolyForth was not limited to 64K, in an effort to
steer the discussion away from the taboo. This, of course, ignores the
many many years during which 16-bit x86 MS-DOS dominated the computer
world. It was not "pretty soon" --- it was almost 10 years too late,
by which time Forth had been totally discredited as a serious
language. Your claim, "PCs didn't really become interesting until the
386 was available," is a real humdinger! I've never heard that before!
In 1984, when I was a senior in high-school, Forth was taken
seriously. At that time, Forth could have become the standard language
for PCs. C was an unlikely choice for PCs, as C was tied to Unix, and
generally considered to be inappropriate for personal computers. Ten
years later, in 1994, Forth was totally discredited, and C was the
industry standard. More than anything else, it was PolyForth that
killed Forth. C and Pascal both supported the six memory models, with
the Small (64K code and 64K data) being the most commonly used. There
was also the Tiny model which was used for .com files. In the Tiny
model, application code and data shared a 64K segment. PolyForth was
much worse than Tiny however, because not only did the application
code and data share a 64K segment, but the compiler and dictionary had
to fit in that same 64K segment as well. This limited PolyForth to
only extremely tiny programs. PolyForth was not just worse than C and
Pascal, but it was worse than QBasic --- it was totally unsuitable for
professional work.
People on comp.lang.forth don't just avoid stating that 16-bit
PolyForth had this severe size limitation, but they often will lie
outright and say that the limitation didn't exist. They just don't
want to admit the truth, because doing so implies that nobody at Forth
Inc. knew how the 16-bit x86 segment registers worked, which is just
embarrassing.
SwiftForth is 32-bit, but it also has severe problems. My version-2
copy, which I paid almost $500 for, doesn't word-align data.
Apparently nobody at Forth Inc. knows that this improves the speed a
lot, which is also an embarrassing level of ignorance. When I pointed
out this problem, Elizabeth Rather called me a "novice" in response.
The (LOCAL) word crashes the whole system. How do you get as far as
version 2, without noticing a problem like that? LOCALS| does work,
and it can be used as a work-around. Apparently at Forth Inc., nobody
is allowed to point out bugs, so they just work around the bugs for
years and years. There are a lot of other problems with SwiftForth
that I could point out --- SwiftForth has all of the appearance of a
$30 shareware hobbyist system --- SwiftForth doesn't look like a
professional system at all.
It is not just bad implementation either. The ANS-Forth standard is
badly designed. It is very wishy-washy, using the word "may"
throughout. For example, locals may be on the return stack or may have
their own stack, floats may be on the parameter stack or may have
their own stack. What exactly is being standardized here? Also,
LOCALS| has its arguments backwards. That is stupid! Apparently nobody
at Forth Inc. could figure out how to reverse the order of the strings
in the input stream (see my { in my novice package for how to do
this), so they just standardized LOCALS| to have its arguments
backwards, which makes for some incredibly hard-to-read code. There
are a lot of other problems with ANS-Forth that I could point out.
I really don't believe anything that Elizabeth Rather says. I think
that it is all just revisionist history, blame avoidance, name-
dropping (like when she claimed to be friends with the Obama family),
and taking credit for other people's accomplishments --- a big
steaming pile of salesmanship --- Forth Inc. is the reason why
professional programmers refuse to have anything to do with Forth
nowadays (actually, for the last 20 years).
