Yeah, that happens, but a lot of the time things are standardized enough
that you can design your application around the libraries and the right
things happen. Even more basic than libraries are OS services. For
example, that program I mentioned had to save data in files, and upload
the files to a server. And to do that, it used the OS-provided file
system, where in a bare-metal Forth, I gather I'd have had to use
something like blocks.

The development process may be different but the language capabilities
are roughly comparable.

I'm not talking about testing. These devices are deployed at customer
sites all over the US (maybe by now all over the world) and they have to
upload files to a server several times an hour when running in
production. This is done with https over the internet but in the old
days it would have been dialup.

I don't get that--if they have users, then they have a UI. In some
cases the UI is something like a serial port, but that's still a UI.

Really, development process can only get you so far. Python speeds up
development by burning more memory than Forthers have traditionally been
willing to, having built-in dictionaries, lists, classes, GC, etc., plus
giving up deterministic latency (eliminating realtime guarantees that
really are a strong point of Forth, but lots of applications don't need
it). Yes you could write all that stuff in Forth, but that would be
more development time to get something funky and idiosyncratic.
Attempts to package such stuff as libraries for Forth have never gotten
any traction as far as I know.

What happens if a task goes into a loop, doesn't the whole system lock
up? Do you have to use a hardware analyzer to figure out what's going
on?

While you're designing, I'm shipping product ;-).

Technically true, I just have observed embedded designers tend to design
protocols from scratch, treating every bit sent over the wire as
something precious, instead of just slapping out JSON over TCP or
soemthing like that.

I wrote "list comprehension" not "[function]". List comprhensions are
sort of like SQL queries inside the language, and don't exist in Forth
and don't make much sense in languages without GC. A trivial example is
Euler problem 6: http://projecteuler.net/problem=6
Here is my Forth solution:

    : ^2 ( n -- n ) dup * ;
    : sum-of-squares ( n -- n ) 0 swap 1+ 0 do i ^2 + loop ;
    : sum-squared ( n -- n ) 0 swap 1+ 0 do i + loop ^2 ;
    : diff ( n -- n ) dup sum-squared swap sum-of-squares - ;
    : euler6 ( -- n ) 100 diff ;

That took me a few tries to debug. I used n as a parameter everywhere
for ease of testing. Note there are algebra tricks to make the
calculation more efficient, but I purposely did it the naive way. Here
it is with Haskell list comprehensions:

  euler6 = sum [i | i <- [1..100]]^2 - sum [i*i | i <- [1..100]]

(That is not really idiomatic, but it illustrates the listcomps).
Of course it gets more interesting when the stuff coming back from
the listcomps is complicated objects.

> You really should get some serious experience with Forth before making

I've messed around with Forth enough to IMHO have a sense of its strong
and weak points. I think I understand at least the basics, which people
keep saying is supposed to be good enough to get stuff done with it. I
still have some interest in using it on small embedded cpu's. I just
can't see myself writing complex applications on larger cpu's with it.
