That is a very interesting observation. Some 20 years ago, or maybe a bit more, I worked on an array processor, a DSP chip when they were the size of a double wide refrigerator. I designed one board in the machine, an I/O processor which was a DMA engine. The machine consisted of two racks; one with a pair of backplanes, one for cache memory, the control board (a 68010 CPU) and I/O processor boards, the other for the main memory. The other half of the machine had three boards with custom ECL gate arrays. The actual compute head (four ALUs) took up two of these boards and the third was the SMP (storage move processor), in other words, an eight way DMA engine. So the machine was about a third ALU, a third memory and a third DMA to keep every thing supplied with data. I was not long out of school then and when I realized how relatively little of the machine was actually doing computations I was surprised. It is something I've never forgotten. You see the same thing in DSP chips. They have fairly small amounts of logic to do the math and use most of the real estate for the busses and logic to do the DMA. In fact, the TMS6xxx family of 8 CPU, VLIW DSPs, lacking memory address generators in hardware use about half of the CPUs to move data around in most apps. -- Rick
