Actually, you are wrong about that: In this bare-metal situation, your program is in ROM or some sort of ROM-like memory, where overwriting is really hard. So you can rely on your interrupt handling code, it's fairly bullet-proof. And of course it is possible to send an equivalent to a kill signal, e.g. a throw in the task that hangs. If the error handler frame is still some good, the catch handler can print diagnostics.
