Yes, it probably doesn't/shouldn't carry the most weight in the choice of which device to use. Yes, I think that is a good point. If an MCU goes away, you need to find a replacement that not only runs the same instruction set (not too hard) but has the same mix of peripherals and memory, etc which may or may not be so hard. I've seen Atmel obsolete any number of AVR chips, but they usually have another that not only runs the same code with the same peripherals, but fits the same footprint. In a similar situation the newer FPGA won't fit the same footprint and you will need to respin the board. So in that sense the life of the specific FPGA device can be important. -- Rick
