In particular, only blue light affects circadian rhythm. Using blue lights at night wakes people up, but it makes it more difficult for them to fall asleep again--and get up the next morning. I didn't know about this effect when I painted my office sky-blue a few years ago, but I _have_ noticed that I wake up a lot faster there than in any other room in the house. You're not buying the right bulbs, then. My LED BR-30's[*] cannot be distinguished from the equivalent incandescents with respect to diffusion. [*] Costco - Feit, IIRC.

In that, the light source is aimed at a bowl shaped reflector which difuses the light. The light might also be reflected off the ceiling. This made for excellent reading light since it was so diffuse, but was inefficient since light was lost in the reflection. I remember needing to be able to read stuff while sitting in the school auditorium and finding it difficult. The auditorium was lit was large incandescent lamps (probably 200W) with minimal diffusers. This was perfectly fine to light the way for people taking their seats and leaving, however, the nature of the specular light sources left many shadows on reading material. Unfortunately, due to building overcrowding the audiorium was used as a classroom. An auditorium seat is not the same as a classroom desk and rather cumbersome; the school got complaints over that use. Ironically, almost all the rest of the school building used fluorescent lights; and I think they used incandescent in the auditorium because it looked a little classier--fluorescent, while more efficient, still had a cheapness associated with it. As an aside, classrooms used U-tubes arranged in a daisy-wheel fixture. I think by now all of that has been replaced. (I am curious as to how the building infrasture has evolved over the years. I know they changed the name from 'junior high' to 'middle school' and even found matching letters to change the name on the building exterior.)

It's funny how there are trends in LED colors. Back in the days it was red, green or amber. Then at some point eye-piercing blue became fashionable, and all new computers came with those LEDs. Apple and anyone who wanted to be Apple went for white ... I recently found out a coworker's desktop PC has a green LED on the front. That looked odd; no doubt the manufacturer's design people had hesitated to use such an unusual color ... although it was the norm a decade back or so. That's always a solution. I even use it on small switches and stuff; I find most LEDs annoying even when they're just medium bright. And yes, I find blue extra annoying. They did *not* "burn out" often, like the older incandescent light bulbs that were used for these applications in the past. The brightness of an incandescent lap indicates the duty cycle of the waveform applied to it, which can be handy at times. On the other hand, the human eye's persistence of vision does a fair job of duplicating the condition with an LED. However, I've noticed that if I sweep my eyes back and forth while looking at a new car's LED tail lights, I'll see a series of red dots. The special assembly I remember reading about was a unit that would show either red or green depending on the polarity of the applied power. Presumably it contained both red and green LEDs plus diodes, wired in opposite directions. But certainly the ones I bought had dubious brightness. The best red were just indicators, it was only later that any put out a lot of light. I suspect the color went in waves. Red was the one because those were common, but then suddenly green became cheaper or brighter, so someone went to green and others followed. Same with blue when they came along. I'm surprised we arent' seeing white ON leds, but even in the old days, such indicators generally were colored (throught filters when they were incandescent bulbs), and I think red had been fairly standard on equipment that had power indicators. There was an article in Ham Radio fairly early on, and it did the conversion via all kinds of transistors, and then it used a Teletype printer, the kind that printed on a strip of paper. Until a certain point, displaying was the problem, since it was too much trouble to build something that showed a decent number of characters at a time. SO the efforts predate microprocessors, but become much easier once they arrive. Byte once had an issue with the theme of morse code conversion. Lots of interesting stuff, and I'm sure one made the connection to barcodes. I just read that an early attempt at a barcode was based on the concept of morse code, or at least "dots and dashes". It's amazing to think back to 1978, when packet radio came to amateur radio. A whole CPU dedicated to being a packet controller, undoubtedly in part to emulate packet controllers on arpanet. But while it seemed a bit overkill, it didn't require anything but a terminal, and making a standalone unit meant they didn't have to create hardware and port the software to every single small computer at the time. GCHQ were an early adopter of computer morse code readers, a fact the Russians and East Germans soon learned and I sometimes used to hear their operators sending deliberately bad, and I mean *really* bad, code to confuse them. On reboot it output the error messages in Morse code on the internal speaker! My dvd player has a bright blue led to tell me it's switched *off*.
