I note the definition of marriage is some old-fashioned mumbo jumbo about a male and a female. It seems like writing a program and letting someone else come in later and redefine the variables. It has already been ordained there are no constants. Do you see what I'm getting at? ISTM the dolts commonly elected to public office have been given a very dangerous tool.

I assume you're referring to the reduced quote above.
It's pretty simple; if a law uses a word listed in the Dictionary Act
and doesn't provide its own definition, then the definition in the
Dictionary Act is used.
This allows, for instance, "human being" to have a consistent definition
that everyone understands and that covers various corner cases without
having to put such clarification into every law--and probably get it
wrong or leave it out in various cases, meaning that some people would
be human beings for the purpose of some laws but not others.
It's also a convenient way to "fix" old laws that have common defects,
such as defining "man" to include women in order to make men and women
literally equal in the eyes of the law rather than having to edit
thousands of laws to replace "man" with "person". This does make it
awkward to refer to only men ("male persons"), but IMHO that is a
feature, not a bug.

Yes; that section was added to clarify that all persons born alive are
human beings, and that required defining live birth. I daresay that it
doesn't disagree with the commonsense definition of the term, so I'm not
sure what the point was, but perhaps there were some court rulings they
disagreed with.

That was probably part of the Defense of Marriage Act, recently
overturned by SCOTUS. Unfortunately, Congress rarely goes back and
corrects such laws, especially when the majority (or even just a
majority of the majority) disagrees.
My state still has laws on the books about slaves, though they've been
edited to replace "slave" with "black" and then "black" with "vagrant",
even though each iteration was overturned by SCOTUS. They gave up
tinkering with that decades ago, but they're not willing to repeal it
completely because doing so might cost them rednecks' votes.

There are actually some programming languages like that, but in general
I wouldn't even try comparing programming to politics :)

Indeed. For instance, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was
intended solely to repeal some bad SCOTUS decisions, but since Congress
used "person" rather than "natural person", they accidentally granted
the same religious protections to corporations. Oops. But until the
neocons were desperately looking for a way to defeat Obamacare, nobody
thought that corporations could _have_ a religion to protect anyway, so
it didn't seem like a mistake worth correcting--and now the issue has
been so politicized that fixing it is impossible.

Parasites kill themselves eating away at their host. A corporation can eat itself up and die. I thought viruses were living organisms. IIRC, what was unclear was whether they were plant or animal. While computer viruses fit some of the characteristics of biological viruses, I wish the word _sabotage_ had been adopted instead. "Virus" makes it sound like the PC was infected by a random act of nature--as we catch a cold--as opposed to a deliberate malicious attack which a computer virus is.

If they qualify for a spot in the taxonomic hierarchy, they would be in a totally separate kingdom. The more deadly a parasite is to a particular host, the less dangerous it is to the entire host population. Spanish influenza, bubonic/pneumonic plague and HIV epidemics became pandemics precisely because they killed their hosts so slowly; one person could infect dozens or hundreds of others before their death. In contrast, ebola epidemics "burn out" because deaths quickly outpace its hosts' ability to infect others. There are several models, but the one I learned in HS and college had five kingdoms of life: Monera/Bacteria, Protista/Protozoa, Plantae, Fungi and Animalia. Some divide Monera/Bacteria into Eubacteria and Archaebacteria due to radically different metabolisms; some also (or instead) separate Achezoa and/or Chromista from Protista/Protozoa, giving anywhere from 5 to 8 kingdoms total. Regardless of model, viruses clearly don't fit into _any_ of them. Computer viruses have a lot in common with biological ones, aside from the obvious difference in origin. Regardless, the term is falling out of common use because the industry has (finally) done a decent job of eradicating true viruses--and (so far) done such a bad job of dealing with newer types of malware. Not to twist the metaphor too far.... but corporations need to entrain/co-op/enslave/convert a bunch of higher organisms -- humans -- to devote effort, consistently work toward, its ends rather than their own. Is there an analogue for that in biology? I can't figure what might be the metaphorical "host" for a corporate entity. They take the financial, juridicial, political, social environment as a given, just as natural organisms take the natural environment as a given. Governmental agencies frequently have the same view about getting other
people's money. The abolish of subsidies tends to reduce the parasites.
Anglo-Saxon countries are good at bankrupting companies that are no
longer needed. Courts are still suspicious of granting a company money
without a contract.

I think corporations always had that attitude, but it would also include the money of vendors and employees. Until recent years, corporate power was held in check by various laws, court decisions, regulators, and public attitudes. But recently, corporations are seen as gods to be appeased, and things that hold them back are bad.

A specious "right" being enshrined in the various "free trade"
treaties that the corporate & financial folks are so keen to
establish. Didn't a US company already sue the Canadian government
under NAFTA over prohibition of MMT in Canadian gasoline? [1]
Works like this:

+ You and your neighbors pass a law forbidding sale of hard

Oh - I suspect that someone who'd been in business long enough could
determine to some margin of error how much they would lose in
non-recoverable sales if they were closed for a day, but I don't
hesitate to speculate that many business who squawk about "lost sales"
are not engaging in that level of rigor.

chick. She was all excited about a proposed one-day boycott of
Evil_Oil_Company (Could be Exxon, might have been any of the others).
Me: Why?
Her: EOC sells $100 bazillion of fuel a day. If we boycott them
for one day, they will lose a hundred bazillion dollars.
Me: Not likely. While they may hae lower sales on Monday, most people
are going to continue buying gasoline. Their sales for the rest
of the week will just be a little higher than average to make up
for the day of lost sales.
Her: Buh?
Me: You didn't take any math, stats or business classes did you?
