A fairly recent BBC documentary about measurement of things claimed that
they were initially called degrees because the thermometer in use had a
circular tube, which was read in angular degrees. A quick search failed
to provide any references to this, and I've rather lost the will to
spend ages looking things up after responding to osmium, so I'll leave
it as an enticing morsel for someone else to follow up.
And, of course, by the time people were used to using degrees to measure
temperature, so it would initially have seemed normal to use degrees for
absolute temperature. (And note that the Rankine scale still uses
degrees, despite being an absolute scale.)

That makes sense. It used to be that way in the UK (and I'm sure it
still is for some die-hards).
I still sometimes hear non-specific "degrees" used in weather forecasts,
and you usually have to guess which scale they are talking about...
I now think in degrees Celsuis, and always did so for low temperatures:
I don't personally know anyone in the UK who use degrees Fahrenheit for
low temperatures (to me, "32 degrees" is unpleasantly hot), but I'm sure
there are those who do/did. For many years I thought in both scales,
using degrees Fahrenheit for high temperatures; at least I'm consistent
now!

I think my real objection to people missing out "degree" in speech

Fascinating; I learned about current and charge when I was about 10 or
11, and capacitance a few years later (14-15). Didn't you have Van de
Graaf generators and gold leaf galvanometers etc. in physics to see the
effect of electrical charge (coulombs)?
Although, having said that, I don't have a clear appreciation of how
much electrical charge 1 C is; I don't know whether touching an earthed
object while carrying a static electric charge of 1 C would be a mild
shock or enough to blow my arm off. (Even knowing its definition -- one
ampere for one second -- doesn't help much, but I suspect it would be
rather more than "mild".)

For instance, how "bad" a summer is here is measured by the number of days (either consecutive or total) over 90 degrees. Junior high had nice shops for industrial arts. 7th and 8th graders took simple intro courses, but 9th graders have the heavy duty stuff, which they could continue with in high school. I don't think they still offer such shops today, which is a shame, because we still need carpenters, electricians, and metal workers. Back then, only boys took shop. Girls had home ec (they had kitchens and sewing machines). In hindsight, I'm surprised the frugal city spent so much money equipping junior high shop classrooms, and hiring shop teachers. The city had three specialized vo-tech high schools, but I think most of the high schools and full shop class facilities. Vo-tech high schools often had a bad reputation of being "tough". But I never understood that, I think a kid willing to learn a trade would've been motivated to not mess around, just like the academic kids were motivated to study.

Getting some talent into the vo-tech high schools can be hard, because of their appeared lower status. Perhaps in the past, K12 schools could prepare kids for skilled trades, but today you need specialized training and industry certifications that are far beyond a K12 school's budget. Unions are missing a great opportunity to fill that gap. Many of them _are_ supporting a family. I'm sure most of them would love better jobs but don't have the skills nor any way to acquire them--if there are any better jobs to be had in the first place. At the same time, there are millions of open jobs with no qualified applicants. Also, many such workers have mountains of student loan debt. It's rapidly becoming "normal" for college graduates to move back in with their parents because they can't find jobs that pay enough to live on their own or even with roommates--especially if they have kids. We did have this from the 2012 Republican Platform: Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority. But it seems to me we've had a cultural shift that goes beyond party boundaries. From what I read, when Einstein published his stuff, the whole populace was interested. I think students do need to be given critical thinking skills, and enabled to think for themselves - in this, I disagree with them - *but*, as well, the school system should abstain from attempting to propagandize students away from old-fashioned religious belief. As *that* is violative of the First Amendment; democracy depends on people bringing their fundamental moral beliefs to the table, and the voting booth, from their own sources - rather than the government constructing the electorate of its choice. So the balance is a delicate one, and the dreams of *both* liberals and conservatives must be resisted. John Savard

Not sure I agree that schools "propagandize": Propaganda: information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
