The last bridge that collapsed due to lack of understanding the capacity was AFAICT the Tacoma Narrows bridge; where a previously unmetered variable became the driving parameter; wind shear. All the other building, tower and bridge collapses we have seen have been due to defective materials, defective construction work or defective maintenence. All buildings are in a way exposed to the latter, we use way too little funds to maintain the fundamentals of our building capital. It is amazing how many beatings some of the more spectacular constructions can take. Like the planes that went into Empire State building, the fire in Ostrakina Tower, or the several fires in the Eiffel Tower. In the second story, humans were created before the other animals. There are online resources that raise a lot more issues.
