Indeed, pre-printed forms for line printer output had ruled lines (faint for comma, solid for decimal point) to delinate numbers and not waste space with punctuation. However, when we printed reports on stock paper, we did include the punctuation. COBOL made it easy with its numeric editing feature that automatically inserted commas only when needed and suppressed leading zeros. BASIC had the PRINT USING command that did the same thing.

And Sweden. But among tech people I suspect the period has won by now, with so much material in en_US and all the programming languages using the period. Maybe ordinary people are affected, too; I'll ask Mom to write down pi with some decimals. It's annoying when you're using Excel. If you get an sv_SE copy, you're supposed to use the comma. Comma also becomes unavailable as a field separator in so-called CSV files. Europeans such as the French have IME always used comma as a decimal point and dots to group digits. But in the UK it has 'always' AFAIK been a dot for the decimal point and comma to separate digit groups. Wasn't there a story that an Algol committee could not agree on a notation for decimal point, some of them being American and some being from continental Europe? People argue most about the most trivial things. (Of course, no one wants programming languages to have a comma in the middle of a number when the comma is used to separate fields so IMO the US idea was the better one and, fortunately, the one that programming languages use.) > Britain was different, though. Yes, mid-line dot was (maybe still is in some circles for all I know) the decimal point and in mathematics the dot on the line indicated multiplication. James

Well, the author of _Calculus Made Easy_ didn't follow those rules. He used a raised dot to mean decimal point. What a nasty, disgusting, ugly, worthless little book that was. At the mention of typewriters on here I looked it up, it came out in 1910 - I had no idea when I tried to use it that it was that old. I am quite sure the one I had was by Thompson, I expect the book title has been used several times. I enjoyed reading some of the negative reviews on Amazon and didn't spot anything dissonant with the book I had. It's possible that later printings might have fixed the raised dot problem. Which does nothing for the underlying problem - it had a lousy author.

I remember a book on BASIC where the author was so determined to
use crossed letter O's in source that the text used phi characters
instead. Listings looked odd.
I prefer crossed O's to crossed zeroes myself, but not at the
cost of readability and being silly.

In the old paper days, this wasn't necessary, but with computers, it has to be precise, such as in file names or internet addresses.

I know someone who, having seen that they looked the same on her
computer, used to save herself the trouble of writing capital I and use
lowercase l instead, which made her writing somewhat hard to read at
times if you use a font that does distinguish between them...
(e.g. l'll see what l feel like when l wake up).

Fortunately the BIPM/CIPM (Bureau/Comité International des Poids at
Mesures, who define and publish the SI) addressed this in 1979, which
should ensure it doesn't get used for anything else:

(f) The litre, and the symbol lower-case l, were adopted by the CIPM
in 1879 (PV, 1879, 41). The alternative symbol, capital L, was adopted
by the 16th CGPM (1979, Resolution 6) in order to avoid the risk of
confusion between the letter l (el) and the numeral 1 (one).
