A lot of water in the Middle East is horrible, heavily tainted with salts of various kinds, or kinda desalinated sea water. Building land in non Dublin land in Ireland was making 400,000 euros an acre, on sale recently at 70,000 an acres. If not with planning permission, about 12,000 per acre. I believe that as part of reforms forced by the EU, the proportion of funds backed by `real money' had to be 12% or so, up from 9% under the old system. That's what happened here in 1929: there was a run on the banks, and they ran out of money to redeem demand deposits since they were only required to keep 10% in reserve. Creditors couldn't get any money to repay their loans and thereby allow the banks to reopen, so the entire system ground to a screeching halt almost overnight. The solution is for the central bank (or an intermediary) to "insure" retail banks; if there is a run, it simply prints new money to redeem deposits and the panic quickly ends. Better yet, public knowledge of this is usually sufficient to prevent a panic from ever starting. We had many problems in 2008, there was no run on banks. I pay for it, and the seller puts the payment into the bank, which then gives the money back to someone else as a loan. Which comes back in as a deposit. Loop that process a few times, and the original money has been loaned out 10 times, which means that the bank is getting 10 times the interest on the original loan. When the music stops, several ppeople are involved. (In many cases, people in Ireland, seeing vast profits for little effort, added a loan to their original money and bought property. As long as the public don't pull out more than N% of deposits at the same time, this works fine. That is called a "run" on the bank, and they are very rare when the public knows accounts are insured by the central bank. Prior to that, they happened frequently. The first time around you lend out (1-n), the second time (1-n)^2, the third (1-n)^3, and so until the series terminates. In addition there are leaks, where the money does not go to banks at all, which could be anything from 0.1 to 0.5 depending on the economy, so the function is Sum of (1-(n+m))^n for 1..n, where n is the reserve requirement and m is the "liquidity leak" in the economy. Normal values are around 0.15, +0.2, -0.05 for m and 0.07 to 0.15 for n. m tends to be very stable over time in the same economy. When the bubble nears bursting this reserve requirement should be inched upwards. This will lock up liquidity, and gives less fuel to bubbls as well as added security when it bursts. Barring rarting fraud (which is the correct word for what happened in the US) the downside for the banks is not all that great as long as they sit on a diversifed portfolio. Property may be down 40-50% in a huge swing, but it usually recovers around a third of this pretty fast. And then you have the ~60% of people who still keep paying their mortgages no matter what (because they value the house, and are probably in full swing with repayments), a 15% reserve rate, and a max prime loan ceiling of ~80% the system should be able to absorb such swings without going down. But mess with the fundamentals, like diversifcation, ratings, max primary mortgage ratio and the reserve requirements (all of which were taking place in the 2000-2008 bubble) and you have a depression coming instead of a little bump in the housing market. -- mrr

If you bought $10,000 worth of stock with 10% down, and then the stock dropped to $9,000 the broker would ask you to pony up more money to cover the deficit. If you couldn't pay he sold the stock for whatever he could get for it. This is a perfect recipe for free fall, which is exactly what happened. The latest crash was real estate, which wouldn't have been so much of a problem if people had been buying houses to live in, but they borrowed big planning on flipping the property in a short time, and didn't have enough money to cover the mortgage payments over a long term. -- Pete

Griftopia has chapter on CFTC with rule that people playing in
commodities had to have significant position because speculators created
wild irrational price swings. Then there were 19 secret letters that
went to specific speculators which resulted in wild irrational price
swings (they would bet on going up and then push things up ... and then
bet on things going down and then push things down) ... including huge
spike in oil (& gasoline) summer of 2008. Later member of congress
published the summer of 2008 transactions showing those responsible ...

Securitized mortgages (CDOs) had been used during the S&L crisis to
obfuscate fraudulent mortgages (posterchild were office bldgs in
Dallas/Ft.Worth area that turned out to be empty lots. In the late 90s,
I was asked to look at improving the integrity of supporting documents
as countermeasures. Then loan originators were securitizing
loans&mortgages (CDOs) and paying for triple-A ratings (when both the
sellers and the rating agencies knew they weren't worth triple-A, from
Oct2008 congressional testimony). Triple-A rating trumps supporting
documentation and they can start doing no-documentation liar
loans. Being able to pay for triple-A eliminated any reason for loan
originators to care about borrowers' qualifications or loan quality,
they could sell off (all loans as fast as they could be made) to
customers restricted to dealing in "safe" investments (like large
pension funds, claim is it accounts for 30% loss in funds and trillions
shortfall for pensions), largely enabling being able to do over $27T

If triple-A rated toxic CDOs weren't bad enough, they then start
creating securitized mortgages designed to fail, pay for the triple-A
rating and sell off to their customer/victims and then take out CDS
gambling bets that they would fail (creating enormous demand for dodgy
mortgages). Later the largest holder of the CDS gambling bets was AIG
... who was negotiating to payoff at 50-60 cents on the dollar when the
sec. of treasury steps in, forces them to sign a document that they
can't sue those making the CDS gambling bets and to take TARP funds to
payoff at face value (AIG is the largest recipient of TARP funds and the
firm formally headed by the sec. of treasury is the largest recipient of
face-value payoffs, which also happened to be one of the major commodity
speculators referenced by griftopia).

But such an index is still useful as a guarantee against (hyper)inflation. This is happening quite often with speculators in the more volatile, thinly traded and exotic goods. They expect to be able to benefit from occasional shortages and sell high; and often do. But sometime these commodities can go very close to zero, and then it is easy to want to abandon the position. Because there is a cost with finding a buyer in such situations, some people think they can just ditch the forward. You can't. You will get that call, around 3 days before it comes to delivery. So you had better find a sausage factory, a football maker or somesuch. -- mrr
