Check the Linux Android dev kit. We _were_ gonna get many things we have them--they were already in the pipeline or just coming out. As to long-lived landline phones, yes, my rotary sets are ancient and still work fine with good sound quality. Unfortunately, almost every business today requires a Touch Tone phone.

I only use the mobile phone for emergencies.

We upgraded to Nortel 2500 sets a decade or so ago, all picked up in junk shops and flea markets, 4 out of 5 working fine after swapping some parts around. We have to have Touch Tone to report a power outage or get support from our ISPs. The upgrade was prompted by a telco service guys' strike. A marketing guy and an office manager came out to fix a static problem. After 3 visits and repeated failures, the manager guy drove 5 miles down the road and stuck a new circuit board into a metal cabinet. That fixed the problem but disabled pulse dial. Happily, we had the 2500 sets on hand, having anticipated some such event, and just plugged them in. Most goods are so cheap to replace these days--and so hard to get parts for--that it's not worth trying to repair them. OTOH, I discovered long ago that nearly everything wears out or breaks shortly after the warranty expires, so that is the first thing I look for when buying anything I expect to last. The fridge and freezer are still going strong, as is the mixer my mother got as a wedding gift. I doubt mine will last anywhere near as long, even though I made a point of buying brands with a good reputation and warranties. Most other expensive household items these days are electronic, and it just doesn't make sense to repair those because a replacement will be both cheaper and better anyway. One oddity is that my parents' artificial Xmas tree, which they bought 50+ years ago, still looks better than most of the _real_ trees I see these days, and far better than any of the modern fakes. Two points on toasters:

We only replaced the fridge because the starting current for the 60s
750W motor/compressor was too much for our 1500 W emergency gen set.

Haven't looked at the latest (last decade) models but until recently,
pickups were built in the old fasioned way, a cab and a box on frame
rails. You can even straighten a bent frame with affordable
equipment. Cars are all monocoque construction -- no frame and every
sheet metal part supports every other in an "engineered to within a
hairsbreadth of destruction" mode. Anything more than a fender ding is
likely to require deeply invasive surgery of the robot-assembled
tinwork (viz. the whole monocoque assemblage).

I don't have much in the way of clothing that's newer. I retired five years ago and I'm now trying to wear out work shirts, etc. The stuff seems to last forever. Hondas just seem to last forever and this one "only" has about 125,000 miles on it. My Nissan is a 2001 and still has very few quirks. -- Pete

One of the Logitech mice I got failed eventually with the traditional fault with Logitech mice, the left button starts double hitting when the microswitch fails. Brown suede leather jacket with cowboy fringe about 6 inches long. Bought in 1974, 41 years old. Bought it right after I got the motorcycle. That fringe would give a passenger a good whipping. I love that jacket, but it's only good for a week or 2 in the fall and a week or 2 in the spring. A couple of pea caps (blue knitted wool) from my deceased father in law (never met him), I think they're from the Navy. He last served in the Korean War. Lots of old stuff in the house, but I just did a major clean up. Still at least 2 furniture pieces from the 30s or before. -- Dan Espen

I'm sure a lot of engineers have put in a lot of hours figuring out how to make a gadget that breaks after a given period of time. Even back in the '60s I heard someone talking about how he got a watch for each of his three sons. All three made it through the 12-month warranty period, and not one made it to 13 months. The scam now is extended warranties, which I always refuse.
