A friend was persuaded to take a lot of very cheap Chinese tools some years ago, and sold a lot to wives just before Christmas, he relocated to a Spanish holiday as the flood of returns started the day after Christmas. Then, I remember when "Made in Japan" was not a recommendation. B&D used to make very reliable tools under their on marque. There was a sea change of some kind at B&D circa mid-80s. One of my most useful and often-used tools is a Black & Decker straight grinder circa 1925. Cast aluminum body, probably cost two weeks wages new. I paid $5 for it in '67. In the mid-70s, a (cast) bush holder broke. I went to the B&D depot in Halifax. The Guy started at the left end of a long shelf with the microfiche (this was pre-computers, of course), moved to the fat, shiny plastic-bound parts books, down the row to the grungy parts books, to the grimy, thin, tattered books to the very last parts book on the shelf, about 20 dog-eared, filthy pages. My grinder was listed. The Guy had two (!) of the brush holders in stock. Of course I bought them both. The grinder is still going and I have one (1) spare brush holder. OTOH, when I called B&D in 2004 about a part for an angle grinder I bought in 1977, the young fellow on the other end diddled with his computer, then said, "Jeeez, that's an *old* one!" We retired a refrigerator just a few years ago that was over 40 years old and still working. Will the new one last as long? As for cars, they're more durable by far than the ones I worked on in the 60s. I have a three-volume set of the collected works of Shakespeare with a print date in the mid-1880s. I picked them up for a song at a garage sale, convinced I'd found something valuable. I hadn't. (Apparently everybody and their dog printed out-of-copyright works in the late 19th). I also inherited my FiL's Delta-Milwaukee table saw, not that much older than me but still works like new (no safety guards and no apologies). I also have several Hallicrafters radios of a similar vintage, and an oscilloscope that's somewhat older (a Tek 547 from the late 40s). The 547 is somewhat unique in that it has two separate timebases, so given the right kind of fault you can actually use it to repair itself.

Yes, I'm reluctant to throw away something that works and is still doing what I want. My LG flip phone places and receives calls and even has a handy calendar. It doesn't do data, but neither do I; I've been happy with it while several generations of iPhones have come and gone. My cheapo Timex digital watch is over 30 years old and aside from its annual battery replacement has only needed a new band. I don't know how old the fridge was, but its colour was the harvest gold that was ubiquitous (along with avocado) in the '70s. Indeed, that was the figure I always took for granted. And tires were only good for 30,000 miles. Our 1998 Honda CR-V currently has 511,000 km on it (just under 320,000 miles) and is still running fine. There are a few minor glitches (e.g. the passenger-side door lock), but they would cost enough to repair that we find work-arounds instead. One subtle but distinct sign that a car is aging is that the seat belt retractors become sluggish. Sure, the flip phones can make calls. The "smart" phones like iPhones can
do much more. Phone calls have become no longer fashionable and out of
date. Smart phones can keep your grocery lists, keep up with prices in
other stores for the same goods so you can compare, help you find which
aisle in the grocery store has the item you are looking for, etc. There are
"apps" on smart phones that help you find a house to buy. You stop in front
of a house for sale, the app uses the GPS location and brings up data about
the property on you phone... immediately.
Can you use the internet via "dial up"??? Yes. Can you get very much done
that way??? No. Broadband internet is a "whole 'nuther world" than "dial
up" internet. Like the difference between TVs with "detent" tuning knobs
compared to TVs that have a remote. It's a whole different experience at a
new level of use. Eventually we will all get dragged kicking and screaming
into the future.
The new-fangled things that are *good* ... allow a person to do *new* things
that were impractical before. If you sit there making calls on your flip
phone, you may get left in the dust.

I am not a very savvy smartphone user, preferring my trusty laptop for internet things; but I have still downloaded around 150 different socalled "apps", which must mean applications. They do all kinds of useful stuff, like tell the altitude, log the pulse meter, is a map/gps, can order flowers, be the ticket for bus/boat/train/tram/plane (40 apps just there) and lots of other stuff.
