When the IBM PC first came out, one clerical person complained that Ctrl-Alt-Del did not work reliably. I saw her enter that character combination, and realized what the problem was, but I wasn't sure how to explain it. So I asked her how she would type a capital A on a typewriter. There wasn't a free typewriter available to demonstrate on, so I had to just explain it in words: On a typewriter, you push and hold down the shift key while you type an A; if you just hit the A key and the shift key together, and let them go together, you wouldn't reliably get a proper capital A. Well, even on an electronic keyboard, the computer needs to know what you want. And it happens that the "Ctrl" and "Alt" keys on the PC keyboard are like the shift key - they change the meaning of other keys, whereas the "Del" key is an ordinary typing key (for our purposes here). It wasn't that she was stupid or anything, it's simply the first computer that she had encountered and no one had ever told her that - of course, printed manuals did come with the PC, but it's not as if everyone had a chance to read them. Agree, The keyboard is not as intuitive as it should be. The small amount of labeling on the keyboard is all over the map. Sometimes labels are side by side, sometimes top/bottom. Sometimes a key has a 2 line description and the top line and bottom line are 2 different things (Pause/Break), sometimes, one thing (Num Lock). Sometimes the key is a toggle, sometimes you need to hold it down. (There are lights for the 2 toggles, so they got that right.) My tab key has a 3 line description: TAB <- -> There's really no support for Ctrl or Alt labeling. Both Ctrl and Alt are modifiers like Shift, but there's no keyboard labeling for either. Worst? It required unlearning a lot of habits, habits that were in some cases 40 years old.

Almost all the 3270 emulators used Enter for Enter. The Newline key which is used more than Enter was usually hidden away on Shift Enter. For the non-IBMers, Newline moves the cursor to the first unprotected field on a line below the current line. 3270 forms are usually arranged with fields you might want to skip to the right. I move Enter to Right Ctrl and restore Newline to Enter. -- Dan Espen

I see that more and more but don't think it makes much sense. When typing in the number area in ISPF edit do you tab from number to text to number to text? I design ISPF forms with the commonly used fields on the left, and a lot of the IBM forms are that way too. -- Dan Espen

At the community college we had Apple ][+s, and the university I transferred to, they had a DEC VAX 11/730 with DEC VT102 terminals. The ctrl and Alt keys were in opposite locations on the two keyboards. So someone typing Alt-x the Apple would instead do a Ctrl -x on the VT102 Created many problems. But when they said they 'lost all my editing' we pointed out the keys were opposite on the machine new to them. -- JimP.

It's convenient for people to press the ESC key on the keyboard to indicate a special program function, but then it mustn't be echoed, since the ESC control character is used to tell the terminal to do special things like make characters blink. Funny, I believe that was the original intent of the ESC key in ASCII. But all the Teletype time sharing systems used it as an 'escape out of line', that is, it cancelled the current line being typed. Even on a PC it still more or less functions that way. Teletypes were designed to allow for forms printing and the attachment of a 'stunt' box for extra features. When ASCII came along, it included a lot of control characters, such as form-eject (CNTL-L), tape punch on/off, tape reader on/off that BAUDOT didn't have natively. So, I don't think there was much of a need for 'stunt boxes' on ASCII based Teletypes. I'm sure some existed for special purposes. The old Western Union literature spoke of widespread private teleprinter networks they developed in the 1950s and 1960s for large business and government agencies. I was always curious as to how communications were handled on them. They weren't computerized, so it wasn't necessary to adhere to strict formats and codes. However, brevity and clarity was important, and messages were probably deeply encoded and still had strict format rules; I don't know if there was a lot of free form text, such as an executive sending a telegram to another executive. For instance, Blue Cross/Blue Shield had a national network so that if a subscriber needed service in a distant state, the local Blue could inquire the home Blue for coverage details. I asked a retired employee of US Steel what they did back in 1960, and he said by then they had voice telephone tie-lines between plants and used them. In the 1950s, IBM developed methods to take telegraph transmissions and convert them to/from punch cards, but I don't know how widely this was used.
