A lot of them still do, though now that people have gotten accustomed to them some manufacturers seem to be dropping that from the packaging. But now we mostly know that a 13W CFL is (almost) light-equivalent to a 60W incandescent. And there was a period when some > incandescent bulbs were being released, touted as energy savers, but > it wasn't really clear. You're probably thinking of halogens. They burn hotter and are a bit more efficient (10%?) than a standard incandescent. But the "regular light bulb size" halogens didn't seem to catch on much, probably due to being considerably more expensive. (I think they may meet the US efficiency standard, though.) And there may have been problems due to UV emission. Now I mostly see halogens in the "odd" form factors, tiny little bulbs and the linear bulbs that go into work lights, and those have a UV filter/"don't touch, it's friggin hot" shield. Those, some years back, seemed to be just > lower wattage bulbs, the saving coming from lower current draw. But the "regular > light bulb size" halogens didn't seem to catch on much, probably due > to being considerably more expensive. They're also quite fragile, the filament is thinner and runs hotter compared to a traditional incandescent, so knocking the lamp makes the filament fail, some more costly halogens have a tiny metal clamp inside the outer bulb that tries to mitigate the problem. The outer bulb is normal glass that is UV-opaque, so there's no problem of UV emissions. Mike

One hopes the incandescent filament has been replaced with something a little more robust that doesn't have to get white hot, too. They shouldn't be affected by the new restrictions applying to incandescent light bulbs. For as long as I can remember, here in the UK we've also had 'tubular' low-wattage heaters which look like heaters not like light bulbs. They are used in airing cupboards or as frost protection in otherwise unheated spaces. -- -- ^^^^^^^^^^ -- Whiskers -- ~~~~~~~~~~

I've a "medical grade" heater that has inside a 100W infrared lamp that actually looks like a a red "disco" spotlight. Other than reusing the production line of the '70 I suppose tha the filament is underpowered, so to emit more infrared light. http://www.lighting.philips.com/main/prof/lamps/infrared/infrared-industrial-heat-incandescent/923801145506_EU/product

Back in the 1970s and even a bit in the 1980s, many large organizations had training programs for various jobs in which the only requirement was a college degree. Some of these included COBOL programmers, others were general managers, some were insurance examiners. A lot of liberal arts majors or specialists in other fields ended up in these programs--about half the class were older people switching careers, not kids coming out of school.

I haven't a clue what power it is. An estate "person" said it should be removed as it doesn't meet some standard or other. It has a built in thermostat and never gets too hot to touch so I ignored him! Steve -- Neural Network Software for Windows http://www.npsnn.com

I've never needed to change one. Another advantage is 4W LED lights produce much the same light as 60W incandescent. LED light is still too white for me after living with incandescent for over 65 years. I'll get use to it! The advertised lifespan is an inducement, but IME the fluorescents don't last as long as they say, I'll have to see how LEDs do. I started replacing incadescents that failed with CFLs, but when I hit ~50%, I did all the rest. So far, none of the latter in have died... ...except when I tried putting one in the garage door opener. The first lasted maybe two days. I thought it was defective, but the second died just as quickly. I discovered special incandescents designed for that usage, and that one is still working years later--as is the other original bulb. Lesson learned. When the CFLs start dying and I run out of spares, I'll probably switch to LEDs, but that will apparently be a long time from now--and by then, they'll probably be dirt cheap. I still use incandescents in my short-duty locations. And 13W CFL are under a buck (sometimes the dollar store has them at 2/$1). LED is getting less expensive, but it's got a way to go yet.

My experience with CFL has varied. Some locations seem fine, the bulb lasting for quite a bit, other locations they seem to fail fast. I have some LED desklamps now about five years old, they are only single LED, but seem fine. I only have one LED bulb to replace incandescent, and that's only a few months old. But I was impressed by it, though that's compared to CFLs. ANd I have no idea how long the LED will last. At least the prices are going down. That "60W" LED (something like 12watts actually, but supposed to be as bright as a 60 incandescent) was ten dollars here in Canada. I'm now seeing LED bulbs of the same wattage selling for 2/11.00, which is a better price, though I don't know if the bulbs are as good. But I suspect pricing will improve. At this point, most incandescent bulbs have been replaced here. I think I feel the difference in the summer, the lower wattage bulbs. But of course in the winter, the less efficient bulbs helped warm things up. Michael

In commercial usage, there is a cost to replace a bulb, and that must be taken into account. Indeed, even in home usage, some lights are in tough locations where paying more for long life would be worth it. > My experience with CFL has varied. I don't mind as much breaking an incandescent light, but breaking a CFL is a pain because (1) the bulb is expensive (2) it makes a mess.
