Barb's claim at hand, however, is that the BBC used "billion" to mean "million" rather than "thousand million" _or_ "million million", which I think everyone here agrees is false. However, the TBTF were creating securitized loans&mortgages designed to
fail, paying for triple-A ratings, selling to their victims/customers,
and then taking out CDS gambling bets (derivatives) that they would fail

largest holder of the CDS gambling bets and was negotiating to pay off
at 50-60 cents on the dollar, then the sec of treasury steps in forces
AIG to sign document that they can't sue those making the CDS gambling
bets and take TARP funds to pay off at 100cents on the dollar. The
largest recipient of TARP funds is AIG and the largest recipient of
derivative face-value payoffs is TBTF formally headed by sec. of

AIR about the same time in the UK a billion was a million million. As time went on billion was adopted for 1000 million in financial matters and later for all figures. AIUI in the UK billion has been taken to mean 1000 million for some decades now. James
