If people were aware that what they're doing is irrational, would they do it in the first place? I suspect most of them _think_ their reason is rational and thus the behavior is rational. There certainly are, however, circumstances where people knowingly do irrational things, e.g. religion; explaining that is more problematic. OTOH, there is the theory that nothing we do is really rational: we behave as we wish and try to rationalize it after the fact. Perhaps some people are just more willing to admit when that has failed. People do things all the time that they know full well isn't in their best interest and will have adverse consequences down the road. For example, being lazy and shopping at the convenience store (paying higher prices) instead of properly planning and going to the supermarket. When it comes to safety risk, people often 'feel' safer in circumstances that are actually more dangerous, because of certain conditions. For instance, driving is much more dangerous than flying, yet people feel safer driving their car since they perceive themselves as in control. A train trip can be faster than driving in heavy traffic, yet some people think their car offers 'freedom'.

OTOH, the cost (time, gas, etc.) required to go to a "real" store may be more than the cost of higher prices at the convenience store, which makes that rational, at least in the short term. I agree that if you are going to the "real" store anyway, it makes sense to stock up on everything to hold you over until the next trip, but that doesn't always work: you may not have enough money at that moment or may incorrectly estimate your rate of consumption. Romantic relationships appear irrational because it's difficult to identify what participants' actual desires are, much less evaluate various strategies chosen to gratify them. Virtually anything could be rational or irrational depending on the particular people involved and how they feel about each other at any particular time. A friend claims that there's no such thing as pure altruism: people who
do apparently altruistic things are doing it for their own benefit,
either because of the warm glow it gives them, or because at some level
they will indirectly benefit from their act. I'm not sure I agree, but
it's an interesting idea.

Imagine a company needing 100 seats of functionality X; which may cost $2k x 100 for commercial software, where you are dependent on an external vendor, rolling your own which may easily top $2M, or investing $50k in a FOSS alternative to make it suit your purpose. In alt 1 you have a budget of $200k plus maintenence by a single vendor, in alt 2 you have a budget of $2M and the result is not proven and you are stuck with whoever built if for you, and in alt 3 you have a budget of $50k, and a choice of a whole ecosystem to service it for you. You just have to contribute the code back to the ecosystem. Competitive bidding for that ecosystem is alive and well in all the large FOSS systems I have worked on. -- mrr

ISTM that if you don't necessarily agree, it hasn't been explained properly; she explains it well in _For the New Intellectual_ (a terrible title). A lot of politicians, especially, get a nice warm rush by giving other peoples' money to some lazy-assed good for nothing.

When was that decided? She could be right about one thing without that being the case. In this case, she could easily be right... for certain values of "altruism". That is, what she wrote is likely to be trivially true if altruism is defined appropriately... but once that is done, the traditional view of the value of altruism is diminished not a whit by her statement.
