I suspect she wasn't aware that fonts could he switched, or perhaps even
that other fonts existed, and therefore assumed that the way she saw it
in her software was the way everyone else would see it. After all, if
you were writing something by hand and your I was indistinguishable from
your l but took fractionally longer to write, nobody would know if you'd
cheated and written l instead, would they?

Indeed it is, but not many people seem to know about it. (There are
lots of things about units that people seem ignorant about: two of my
minor bugbears are people using uppercase K for kilo[0] -- e.g. Kg --
and writing units named after people with an initial capital
(e.g. Volts, Newtons or milliWatts)[1].)
I really ought to switch to using L for litres myself, because it's
certainly much less ambiguous, but after all these years of using l my
fingers seem resitant to the concept.
[0] K is OK when used to indicate a 1024 multiplier, as in KB of RAM; it
should strictly be kibibytes, KiB, but that hasn't really gained popular
traction despite being defined in the last century.
[1] I believe initial capitals are correct in German, because that's the
normal form for nouns in the language, but in English unit names should
be written with an initial lowercase letter (N.B. this doesn't mean they
should be all lowercase: consider degrees Celsius).

And I sometimes wonder if there's anybody left in the media that knows
that it's "degree Celsius", not "Celsius", and that the symbol is °C,
not just C (the coulomb)? Everything I see or hear about weather, and
especially climate change, just uses "Celsius" and "C". (Even proper
meteorologists presenting weather forecasts, who really should know

cps -> Hz is an obvious one, because the SI had no "cycle" or equivalent
that could have been used in the "<unit>/s" formulation that they had
agreed upon. Others, especially things like N/m^2 -> Pa, are perhaps
less so.

I've never understood what most of the specialized units really mean, e.g. in terms of their composition; for instance, I know the farad is the unit of capacitance and the ampere is the unit of current, but I don't really know what capacitance and current _are_, nor do I have any clue at wll what a coulomb is. They are just values that I (rarely) need to look up and plug into a formula. An "outhouse" is a microbarn, and a "shed" is a yoctobarn, but apparently nobody actually uses those as independent units. A "shake" is 10e-8 s, but it's not an official unit. And there's always the "nibble", half a byte.

There was also a GETTAB which returned the number of jiffies/second. /BAH

I don't understand your point. IME, customer sites used charging money for resources to cause their users to use them spareingly. When paper became very expensive, the cross-charges were raised for each page printed. CPU-bound jobs were encouraged to run during non-prime times because the costs would be less (prime time CPU cycles were priced to be more expensive than non-prime time to achieve this behaviour). /BAH

That raises another question, though: why did Europe choose 50Hz rather than 60Hz in the first place? It is a compromise between transmission losser, which go up with frequency, and transformer weight/cost, which go down with increasing frequency. Also, some frequencies are better than others when it comes to saving people that get in contact with the wires. ISTR ~80Hz was an optimal frequency for this last criteria. 60Hz has noticably weaker interaction with the heart tham 50Hz, and together with the halved voltage this makes the leftopondian cabling messes somewhat safer, The railroads went for 16 2/3 minus some small part so not to interfere with the 50Hz too badly. Do you have a cite for that? I'd have thought that house fires caused by
the combination of aluminium wiring, 110V (and hence twice the current),
wooden houses, volunteer fire brigades and large distances would have
outweighed any benefit from the difference in frequency.
I have tried (not very hard) to look up the difference between the rates of
electrocution and electrical house fires between the US and UK but not
found anything hard and fast.
