One day we calculated what percentage of the time we'd have to shut it down for the clock error to be minimized, and then on a lipstick-on-a-pig moment actually DID that for a week to test our hypothesis. Many years later, I had a laptop that supported "Turn on at some specified time in the future", (apparently one of the features that some (all?) ACPI chipsets offer is an "alarm clock" wakeup) and the story of the sloppy clock immediately flooded back into my mind -- because now we could have REALLY dressed that hog up -- it would have been feasible to write a script that after so many hours of uptime, command the computer to sleep for a specified period of time. Of course, by that point, the issue was entirely moot, because ubiquitous networking and NTP made any error of the embedded TOY clock immaterial. --NK1G

My digital-clock radios take a 9V battery for backup. But even with it, after a power failure the clock is a few minutes off. Of course, without the battery it would go to blink time. If there was a power failure at night, at least I'd still get up more or less on time. My old VCR did not have a replaceable battery, but had some sort of internal power storage for the clock. However, it too would be a few minutes off after a power failure and need to be reset, and would not work after a long outage.

No, hydro turbines are one rigid piece. You can vary the pressure a little by moving the nozzle a bit, but you are within 1-2% of the pressure range. You regulate the flow to match the needed output, but you don't have all that much of a range there either. So hydro power stations do go offline when they are not needed, -- mrr

How do they control speed, which I assume is based on flow >volume, precisely enough to remain in sync with the grid? They regulate the flow. Usually, "our" style of hydro has a fall of several hundred meters, and the regulation of the output is done at the top end, where the water is managable in terms of pressure. (near ambient) The turbine blades are very finely tuned to the accelration of the water, and they would have to be changed to run at a different speed with full efficiency. Hydro now runs at a thermal efficiency of > 80%. This applies to all turbine driven systems, although steam in more tolerant, -- mrr

How do they control speed, which I assume is based on flow > volume, precisely enough to remain in sync with the grid? There's a "lock-in" effect with large generators. If a particular generator's phase starts to lead the grid then that generator picks up more load and consequently the generator lows just a bit. Conversely, if the generator starts to lag behind the grid then it sheds load and starts to act more like a motor. As with all feedback control systems having a time delay there's a certain range of stability and there's consequences for trying to operate outside that range.

The diverging generators must be way off to slip even one cycle, and that will make big havoc. You will hear a *loud* bang if this happens. Way before this can happen you can see distorsions in the phase of the current, where current != voltage. If it tends to race, then you will see a stronger climb than a pure sine, and if it tends to lag you will see a stronger tail. Combine this with the non-ohm loads on the grid, and you need to fine-tune the generators, so you actually have a slightly squared current, beyond the pure sine. This means you need some generators to lag a little and some to race a little. Around 12-15% off sine is where the load is, gradually creeping ahead as we get more capacitive loads on the grid. (peecees and home entertainment stuff, powered by these umbitious power bricks that use capacitors and diodes to rectify, then regenrate a 400Hz AC and transform it to the voltage needed, and then rectify again. These give significant leading loads on the grid. Contrast this with our slow phasing out of strong motors, and we see the load go leading. So, more generators will be set to slowly race, but not nearly enough to overtake a cycle, just 15-20% ahead on the curve. -- mrr

I hope to hell that PFC doesn't stand for power factor correction in the USA. That would be insane. Wouldn't it? I take it that "calling for" means some group is trying to impose such regulations.

Sorry, I doubted you. Putting a large power plant online is a scary thing. You would run the generator as close to the mains as you can, and wait for them to get in sync, Then you throw the switch, and simultaneously give full throttle to the engines. (engines being hydro/steam turbines) to avoid the inveitable sagging it will do when suddenly under load. This sagging makes a foot sized I-beams bend like they were made of rubber. I have seen them move 2-3 cm where they hold the generator, with an interference frequency of a few seconds in period. Those are normal operating procedures, If you remove the water, the turbine will keep turning. -- mrr

I'd forgotten those; excellent.

Sometimes spelt nybble IME.
I've always been rather partial to archaic units like roles and perches;
and I'm especially fond of the speed unit furlongs per fortnight, which
was actually a (quietly 8-) supported unit in some vehicle simulation
software I wrote years ago.
(One furlong/fortnight is ~0.166 mm/s; not a particular useful speed in
vehicle simulation, but that wasn't the point.)

That was meant to be poles; my fingers were obviously thinking rods
