There was a version of Rexx for the Amiga (A-Rexx). People who used it
loved it. Its bag of tricks included inter-process communication.

WAY back, latter 70s, Bill Gates used to participate
in 'contests' to see How To Do It In The Least
Bytes/Cycles/Mem - and often won. I do REMEMBER his name
from Way Back When. As such, despite all after, I do
NOT doubt his coding acumen.
The follow-on that a LOT of today's code is
STILL Bill Gates code - just adapted for a
particular chip. Smart ASM that got put
into the libs for almost every computer
language/OS/BIOS and whatever.
There IS 'depth' to all this.
Microprocessors CHANGED EVERYTHING.
Oh, Python 'strings' are ULTIMATELY just
a stretch of memory filled with various
values. The "object" stuff, a carefully-
crafted ILLUSION :-)
I started with ASM ... pre-4004/8008 ... as
such I see things more at their basic level.
Oh, recently found an ADVERT for a "desktop",
more an entire DESK, 8008 all-purpose/wonderful
8008 system. You could buy it with a nice serial
terminal AND a - gasp ! - floppy-disk drive
or, cheap-asses, a tape CASSETTE drive :-)
The first 'floppies' of MY experience were 8-inch
floppies. Huge, actually "floppy", didn't hold much
of DICK.
Ah how times have changed ! You don't even have to
solder-together your own I/O boards anymore !

There is no fundamental difference between hardware and software: “hardware” is just what you start with when you turn the power on, but does that include “firmware” and “microcode”? A lot of what we do in programming/scripting is building one layer of “abstract machine” on top of another, until we get to something optimized for solving our particular problem. Of course, all this goes out the window once you get to the GUI layer; that is the end of the line, with no more programmability (easily) possible on top of that. From that point on, the human user has to do all the work.

(Okay, so it's a team of turtles these days). My FORTRAN IV course started with an examination of the System 360 architecture before getting to the first FORTRAN statement. I'm not sure that happens anymore. Some of the people I worked with who were in their 40s or 50s had a course using the 68HC11 microcontroller at UM but that was later dropped from the curriculum in favor of abstraction. The last I knew Java was the didactic language of choice for the CS people there.

Well, in the end, it's the CPU microcoding ... all else is just a way to make use of that :-) Almost everything in Python ... well, it's a 'C' app really, just made to LOOK like another computer language. Quite a number are even more like that, the GNU compilers especially. They're just syntax translators, turn your 'FORTRAN' or 'COBOL' or FORTH or whatever into kinda unreadable 'C' to then be compiled.

The GNU Fortran compiler translates Fortran to an intermediate language, just as it does with C and C++, and the intermediate language is translated to machine code. According to this page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/gnucobol/ GNU COBOL translates COBOL to C, which is then compiled by gcc. GNU Forth... I don't know enough about it to have an opinion. Python, to the best of my knowledge, is compiled to bytecode which is then executed by a virtual machine. You COULD write a C program that would do what a Python program does, but depending on what features the program used, it might not be worth it; by the time you implemented Python data structures and other stuff, you'd have something as big and complicated as Python itself, and you might as well write the program in Python to begin with. You'd get the program done a lot faster, and it would be much easier to maintain. Louis
