To be fair ("To be fair..." "To be fair..." "To be fair..." -- Letterkenny)
that word's spelling was, I believe, "aweful" - at least some of the time.

I read somewhere of a story where, I think it was King James VI/I,
complimenting an architect on his latest construction, used three
adjectives that would be construed quite differently today. The only one I
can remember was “awful”.

That did seem to be the most common spelling. I did a double take
the first few times I saw it.

Poul Anderson used the story of King James and Sir Christopher Wren and the
compliment that the new Cathedral of St. Paul was "awful, pompous, and
artificial" as the opening epigram of his short story "A Tragedy of Errors"
(first published in _Galaxy_, February 1968), with a note as epilogue that a
later version would read "awe-inspiring, stately, and well conceived".

8 bits kinda emerged with microprocessors. Likely
reflected what was practical to do on the chip
real-estate plus industry competition. 8008 and then
everything was 8 bits. The popularity of the Z80
   kinda cemented it.

Makes you wonder what would have happened when Intel designed the 4004 if
it wasn't for a calculator where BCD fit neatly into a nibble.

Hmmmm ... COULD have been the 5005 or 6006 :-)

Would have been NICE if all those old microprocessors
used 12 bits instead of 8, would have made a lot of
stuff easier to code. 0-255 ain't much to work with.

But I still think the 8008 set the standard.
And yea, there was only SO much they could
cram onto those old chip dies, and 8-bit
stuff was probably the limit early on.

A lot of mini-computers were 16 bit around the
time microprocessors came out, so "half a mini"
   maybe kinda sounded logical.

Should be a fair number of the decision-makers
from the 60s-70s still alive. If anybody knows
   some, ASK.

Well an old friend of mine was involved in a small 16 bit minicomputer
years ago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digico_Limited

IIRC it was all TTL, as CMOS hadnt come in.
They never made the transition to CPU chips as such. When I knew them
around 1975

I am not sure what happened to them after that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_PALM_processor

I don't know about the mainframes but the PALM was IBM's last DIY
processor for the entry level systems. The 5100's successor, the System/23
Datamaster used the 8085.

If they founded DIGICO in 1965 they could not have been ex-ICL;
ex-ICT at most, contrary to Wikipedia.

I seem to remember them proposiing an ambitious successor design
with many bells and whistles.

Perhaps they fell victim to the second system effect.

Surely the IBM 360 was responsible for the popularity
of 8-bit bytes - and that drove the adoption by other
computer manufacturers if only to support common I/O
peripherals.

Definitely. Once people saw how successful the 360 was I don't think there were
any new designs that weren't byte addressable. The success of the byte addressed
PDP-11 was the final nail in the coffin for word addressed machines. It seems
obvious now that you can do word processing on a byte addresed machine by
puttihg the N-byte words at 2^N addresses but the 360 was the first system that
did that.

READING COMPREHENSION TEST: the PDP-11 was little-endian, unlike all previous
byte addressed machines that were big-endian. While there are lots of guesses
about why they did that, as far as I can tell, they never wrote down the reason
to switch the byte order, and I have looked in a lot of places.

To pass the reading comprehension test, if you have the long lost document
explaining the decision, please post a link and I will be very grateful, or else
don't reply. To fail the test, post yet another guess about why they switched
the byte order, ideally including this paragraph that you did not read.

How many previous machines were byte-addressable? Was there anything other
than the IBM 360/370 series at that point?

It just makes more sense.

A lot of older machines were character-addressable. The term “byte” hadn’t
been invented yet. The 1401 (etc), 1620, and many 70xx machines.

Oh sure but I am fairly sure that the 360 was the first machine that
was both character and word addressable with the words at power-of-two
addresses, and a design that allowed word operationw to work as a unit
rather than serially by character.

As far as I know it was also the first character addressable binary
machine. The earlier ones were decimal.

The contemporaneous B3500 was both digit and character addressable,
with characters on even address boundaries. Like the 360, it had
an ASCII flag in the processor that controlled the value of the
zone digit during arithmetic operations on bytes. Like the 360,
nobody used it and it was removed a couple generations later.

The flag was totally useless, especially since that’s all it did. All the
software and peripherals used EBCDIC.

The burroughs systems did support ASCII peripherals (tty, datacom, terminals);
translation between ASCII and EBCDIC was done in the I/O controller.

The ICL 2900 had such a flag. ICL always used EBCDIC, but I was involved
in an alternate operating system that used ASCII. It changed the way BCD
instructions worked, etc.

As so often, it rather depends what you mean by .... Atlas had
24-bit addresses, which comprised [in the standard model] 21-bit word
addresses with the bottom three bits used to address a character within
the word.  Most of the machine instructions ignored the character part;
for example instructions were always taken from the word part. AFAIR,
there were only two instructions that actually used the character part
/as an address/, one to copy a character into a register, the other to
write from a register into a character position. That was out of a rich
supply of other basic instructions and extracodes, plenty of which used
the full 24-bits, but for arithmetic [24, 48 or 96 bits] or logic, not
as characters. So you might regard the character addressing as somewhat
limited, but it was there. Of course in those days [1959-ish] computers
were used for computation. Characters were "only" for I/O, so once you
had enough to read/write numbers and captions, everything else was a
frippery and a waste of a valuable resource. I got into trouble with my
supervisor for writing a program that wrote "poetry" [of a sort] when
I was supposed to be doing celestial mechanics. Luckily, he never knew
what else I was doing.

	Atlas was definitely binary!
