(Segways, not Police). Check ... think they're STILL used by cops in Daytona Beach during "Bike Week". They DO have their niche. Kinda cool tech really ... I remember there was even an off-road version.

A few years before introducing the Segway, he used the same basic self- balancing technology to create a motorized wheelchair called the “IBot”, if I recall rightly. It could run on four wheels, but the bogey could rotate so it balanced on just two, bringing the sitting occupant to regular standing-human eye level. And that rotating bogey helped it to climb stairs, as well. Never heard what happened to that particular incarnation of the idea; then the Segway came along. I think its main problem was its high price. But then, it’s been about 20 years since the Segway was introduced, hasn’t it? So the key patents should have expired by now. Which means we might be able to see some cheaper competitors ... if someone thinks there’s a market for them.

The super-chair was a GOOD use of the tech. Alas the tech was mostly TOO EXPENSIVE/DIFFICULT for the time. But, TODAY ...... someone should re-investigate that particular use. It'd be half the price due to better control electronics/sensors and faster microcontrollers.

But they didn't envision that 25 years ago. Prob - the cheap e-bikes/scooters tend to EXPLODE in flames inside yer apartment and kill everyone ....

Do you lean in the direction you want to go or the other way? Most ten year olds master riding a bicycle. Many years later I took a motorcycle course that explained the physics of countersteering. I was much better off not thinking about it.

The whole scheme depends on accelerometers and PID-like algos. Your movements and control inputs add/subtract to the calx, deviations from vertical centered stationary. Couldn't be made until the compact computing power was finally adequate. Much cheaper drones now are not so much different - can hover in place even in a wind - except the 3rd dimension is added to the mix.

The resulting legal wrangle practically shut down the US aviation industry, allowing the Europeans to get an early lead. Until FDR leaned on the Wrights to loosen up a bit.

In the end the key to powered flight turns out to be simple Enough power to weight ratio. Almost any shit will fly with enough power. The Wright brothers built their own, and as far as I am concerned that is what they get my salute for. The airframe was horrible, barely stable and barely flew, but the engine pushed it into the air just fast enough to take off. Once they showed it was possible, the sky (sic!) was the limit, and people started looking at engines that were more powerful, and light, and at control and stability issues, so that 10 years later by the outbreak of WWI there were 100bhp or more planes in the air with ailerons, that could climb to the limits of human endurance, and top it at over 100mph. What made powered flight possible was the gasoline engine, and the aluminium block If the Wright bros hadn't done it someone else would. There is argument to this day as to whether Santos Dumont beat them to it... -- In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is. -- Yogi Berra

Someone had mentioned Verne so I got one of his lesser known works, 'Robur the Conqueror', written in 1886. I'll have to read '20000 Leagues' or one of the earlier ones. I don't remember him having as acid a tongue as he describes a meeting of wealthy balloon enthusiasts that are fighting over whether the propeller should pull or push. Robur arrives in the middle of the fight and informs them aerostats are a lost cause, that their new electric engine won't allow control except on very still days, and the future is with aerodynes, one of which he happens to have built. He is saved from bodily harm by the balloon fans by pulling two revolvers, firing shots into the ceiling, and making a get-away. Santos-Dumont read Verne and lived the story. Santos-Dumont 5 demonstrated the navigational problems of an aerostat. Santos-Dumont 6 had its moments too before he won the Deutsch prize. As far as WWI plane ceilings, the aerostats won the prize. https://sped2work.tripod.com/zeppelins.html

Defoe's style was a little archaic while 'Swiss > Family' may have been improved by translation. Verne is worth re-reading. He was quite good, esp for his time. Kept company with all the top tech and industry people of his era - so his 'sci-fi' was often closer to 'bleeding-edge'. There have been a few good films of Wells stuff also - the early 60s "First Men In The Moon", the Rod Taylor "Time Machine" and the Gene Barry 'War Of The Worlds' update. Also been BAD films. The odd WOTW with Tom Cruise was weird ... the same story, but from a Joe Anybody's on the street perspective. Home-made spark-gap ... CAN be done. However if you wanna TUNE it you'd better have a Google-like knowledge of winding inductors and the formulas for caps made from little scraps of metal and the relevant resonance equations. Some DO ... even more 50 years ago. I know what NEEDS to be done - but those formulas/tables, long gone from the memory bank. If about to be lost at sea or cast upon an island, always travel with a copy of Glover's "Pocket Ref". Everything in there you'd ever need.
