implemented in CP67 kernal ("subpools") code 1970 (released CP67
R3) ... following from presentation I gave at SEAS 7Oct1986 (European
SHARE on isle of jersey) loots of R3.0, R3.1, & R3.2 was after I had
graduated and joined scientific center and stuff I had done at the univ
as undergraduate in the 60s (one of my hobbies was enhanced production
systems for internal datacenters).

repeated 16Mar2011 at Wash DC HILLGANG user group meeting.
In the morph from CP67->VM370, they dropped and/or simplified a lot of
stuff. 1974, I started migrating a bunch of stuff to VM370R2 base for my
internal CSC/VM ... including kernel reorganization for SMP
multiprocessor (but not the SMP support itself). Then for VM370R3-base
CSC/VM I do SMP support ... originally for the internal online
sales&marketing HONE systems (before it was released to customers in
VM370R4).

You just can’t have RECURSIVE subroutines, or at least not without a lot of work. A fairly common calling convention, used on the 1130, saves the “next” address after the CALL in the first word of the subroutine and jumps to the second. Arguments follow the CALL, so you can access them using the saved word, otherwise the return address, as an index. If you want recursion you have to stash the return address somewhere. -- Pete

In my terms that is 'some form of stack' :-)

Or actual machine instruction codes, as on the PDP-6 and PDP-10:
PUSH ac,address ;any accumulator can be a stack pointer
POP ac,address
PUSHJ ac,address ;address of next instruction on stack, jump to address
POPJ ac, ;pop address from stack and jump to it
There are also subroutine call instructions which do not use a stack, instead
using either the "save return address in first instruction of subroutine" or
"save the return address in an accumulator". The former is nonreentrant; the
latter allows placing parameters inline, with address manipulation via indexing
to access and later skip over them.
Lovely machines to program.

It has a stack frame pointer (ONB, or Local Name Base), a stack front pointer (SF) as well as off stack bases. The accumulator is variable size (32, 64, 128). There are 32 address mode, including those that use the top of stack. So ST.T stores the accumulator at top of stack, and LSS.T (also LSD.T and LSQ.T for the larger sizes) to unstack. Most other instructions can equally well use top of stack in the same way. (yes, there's just one accumulator, but the stack etc. are heavily cached). -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... That's an incorrect quote. The real quote, from Fred Wright II, is
Mars may be smaller than Jupiter, but it is a lot closer.
This was in reference to the Systems Concepts SC-30M, code named "Mars", a
PDP-10 architecture system created by Stewart Nelson and Mike Leavitt (who
should be familiar to readers of Levy's _Hackers_). Fred was one of the
operating systems programmers for their box; he said it after the announcement
of the Jupiter cancellation (May, 1983). I still have my button, courtesy
of Fred.
We took first customer shipment[1] at LOTS (the Stanford academic computing
facility) at All Hallows' Eve, 1986, and placed it next to the 3 KL-10 based
DEC-20s. Stu Grossman, best known for his work at Cygwin, worked in our
computer room for a couple of months to get their CI channels to work with the
actual DEC CI/HSC50 hardware. Stu got fired by Mike for being at lunch with me
when Mike called the computer room.
[1] The box we got was actually their prototype unit, because they had to
deliver *something* or refund the deposit. That's why some of the work was
done in our computer room.

The instruction set is highly fleshed out, so that there are a number of no-ops.
The usual branch instruction is JRST "jump and restore PC flags"; JUMPA is most
often used by DDT for entering and returning from debugger inserted patches,
although a programmer might want to use it for reasons.
The JUMP no-op is actually useful in TOPS-20, where it is used for various
error catches after system calls. The action taken depends on the AC field of
the instruction. NB: These are not mandatory; the programmer can write her
own code to deal with error returns from system calls, and that is frequently
what is done.
Early in the history of the family, different no-ops were faster or slower, so
choice was important. In the KL-10 and all following processors (including
those from other manufacturers), the microcode for most no-ops is the same so
does not matter[1].
The one I use most often is TRN "test right half of AC with no bits modified
and do not skip", one of the test-and-skip family.
[1] See above for JUMP with nonzero AC field.

PDP-8, as I recall.
I've been reading Booth & Booth's _Automatic Digital Calculators_ (1956)
and just started the "subroutine" chapter last night. It's mostly
a discussion of the basic idea, followed by some sample implementations
(APE(X)C, Princeton (Von Neumann), EDSAC). The first two talk about
relocating (copying) the code and automatically updating any memory
addresses used in the subprogram in the copy. The second uses a relocation
table (e.g. GOT or PLT). The third, a method of including a bit of
"header" code in the subroutine to manage the relocation memory reference
within the subroutine. These all worked with very small memory spaces
(even when compared to those in the 1970s). The authors explore the
possibilities where sufficient memory supports subroutines permenantly
resident in memory (note that memory in this case is 'drum' memory);
yet in all cases above, there was no formal concept of
"parameter" passing other than the single accumulator.
Sample modifications
(i) Order[*] (m2+18) of the division subroutine must
be modified to direct control back to the main
routine.
(ii) The appropriate values of "n" and "d" must be
inserted into the division subroutine (i.e.
the order(s) must be modified).
(iii) Order (m1 + 10) of the main routine must be
replaced by a bridging order transferring
control to the division subroutine.
(iv) Order (m1 + 11) must be alktered to A->M(l), since
the quotient is produced in the accumulator.
(v) A "stop" order must end the calculation at the
appropriate point.
[*] Over time, the term 'order' evolved into 'instruction'. The
burroughs mainframe instruction test suite I used back in the
80's was still called all-orders.
The chapters describing storage devices are interesting, with
discussion of:
- Magnetic Tape/recording wire
- Pin stores (think music box)
- Wire stores (similar, but the pins are axial to a flat disc)
- Magnetic Drum (including recording methods, including NRZ)
- Brief, dismissive discussion of a magnetic disc format
with note it was used by the ARC calculator
- Magnetic-Acoustic storage (a form of delay lines)
- Rectangular Loop Matrix Storage (yes, core)
"Although it is true to say that no storage device,
using macroscopic elements, would be acceptable as the
main high-speed memory of a modern automatic computer,
in view of the want of any really satisfactory high speed
store there is a growing body of opinion in favour of
a relatively small "ultra high speed"[emph. ed.] memory
backed up by a large medium speed memory [Cache! ed.].
"In the field of ultra-high speed, the following matrix
device suggested by Forrester, has given promising results."
- Sonic Delay storage (Hg delay lines)
- Dialectric Storage (condenser/capacitors) (anticipating S/DRAM)
Mostly discusses such storage using electron beams (think TEk storage screens).
- Diode-capacitor store (again, anticipating S/DRAM)
Finally the chapter touches on the question of the age:
"The size of an adequate store"
"The answer can be given to this question in a trivial
manner, by the one word 'infinite.'
... a survey made at princeton has suggested that
4096 10 to 12 decimal digit accuracy might be appropriate
for the high-speed storage of a machine.. The main store
should have a capacity of 10^5 to 10^6 words.
... Now that actual computers have been built and operated
it seems 512-1024 words is sufficient for high-speed store
and 2x10^4 words is adequate to back it.
In the near term, expect
(1) An ultra high-speed unit for 32-128 words with 1-5usec access time
(2) A high speed main store for 1024-4096 words, 1msec access time
(3) Low speed magnetic tape or wire, capacity 10^5 or 10^6 words.

If you're thinking that I made an error, no. All of these exist in the
instruction set for the 36 bit line. I'm sorry if it was not clear that I was
only discussing actual instructions in that architecture:
JSR M ;jump to subroutine
stores return address at location M and begins execution at M+1, with return
via indirection (JRST @M); the AC field must be 0.
JSP AC,M ;jump and save PC
puts return address in accumulator (register) AC and begins execution at M,
with return via indirection (JRST @AC).
The following pair combines the utility of the previous pair and allows for
multiple entry points to a subroutine:
JSA AC,M ;jump and save AC
saves the contents of AC at M, the address M in the left half of AC, and the
current PC in the right half of AC, then jumps to location M+1. Return is via
JRA AC,E ;jump and restore AC
places the contents of the location addressed by the left half of AC into AC
and jumps to location E. Because the original PC can be obtained by indexing
off of the accumulator AC, E can be specified as 1(AC) to return to the next
instruction after the JSA, because effective addressing is done before the AC
is disturbed.
PDP-8 only used the "store return address in the first location of the subroutine"
regimen, as you note.

Technically there's nothing stopping you from implementing, say,
Pascal-style strings in C. Of course, that doesn't save you from
null-terminated strings being used in other code you depend on.

Only once. And careful programmers test everything with unlikely data too. I remember code I wrote being passed to a selection of 6th form 'holiday job' nerds to try and break it. And they did. But my main point is that code designed to 'protect' crap programmers introduces its own set of vulnerabilities at a different level. Everyone in major engineering knows that no one ever get it right all the time and that is why instead of trying, they implement quality procedures. Test it as far as possible. If it's wrong: - fix it - document the fix - document why it went wrong - document ways to avoid getting it wrong in future. - implement standards to stop it happening again. Go back and test it all again,. That's the heart of ISO 9000 In software terms that means don't try to fix the language*, fix the procedures under which the language is used, and tested... I love those air accident reports that say instead of 'the pilot was crap ' that 'the procedures and standards for pilot selection, training and certification failed and need to be modified'. In other words the system was at fault for failing to adequately train, hire or even certify such a crap pilot in the first place. The system acknowledges that there are people who want to be pilots, who aren't fit to be. If only we could do the same with coders... *unless there are important undefined behaviours in it -- It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled. Mark Twain

'fit to be' sounds harsh but it's accurate. Everytime I hear some variation on 'let them learn to code' it comes to mind. Due to demographics Massachusetts had a surplus of elementary school teachers in the '80s and that was the proposed solution. I'm sure it would work for some but in general a personality type who became a teacher probably wouldn't be too happy writing code. Gregarious, outgoing, other-directed doesn't describe most of the coders I know.

That includes, if you find a particular language makes you particularly prone to making a particular kind of embarrassing mistake, it’s time to look for alternatives.
