'active', 'class-a', fluidic logic. Seems to require a constant flow thru the specially-designed chamber. For a full CPU we'd be talking a huge amount of water flow. Mechanical valves/pistons ... not much 'flow', but you DO have to add more straight-up mechanical components which will eventually fail. > You can also go analog similar to a BJT. That 'Phillips' machine seems to have been 'analog'. Still not sure why it wasn't made electric instead.

Not all fluids are water. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10413662/ I don't know what fluid was used in FLODAC. It was comprised of 250 NOR gates. I think I've mentioned in my adventures with the Square D Norpak login that you can do anything with enough NOR gates, including losing your ever loving mind.

I recall seeing fluidic components describes as fabricated from thin sheets. so: solid sheet, sheet with intricate structure (flipflop, gate, whatever), solid sheet. Holes would form vias to other layers. So you'd end up with a block of standard components, "wired" by the interconnections. This may have been by Siemens, for slow but ex-proof logic. Vac or not ... sounds more like 'gas' stuff :-) "Fluidic elements" - posted maybe by you - seem to involve a tiny flow chamber where you can form one or another kind of vortex. One spiral yields '1's, the other '0-s', on the output port. Interesting. There are, of course, other ways to do 'hydraulic logic'. However the 'no valves/pistons/etc' trick seems extra cool. STILL wondering what might be done with non-Newtonian fluids .......... VELOCITY becomes part of the design equation. Think (do they have it where you are ?) "Silly Putty". Flows like a fluid if you leave it sit, but seriously hardens-up if you try to shape it suddenly. Some water/starch mixes act the same.

You don't see vacuum-tube electronics much any more - but it still has its place and uses. Found a use for a little diode-resistor logic in a project a few years ago - easier and simpler than anything else (decoding multiple switch positions after an interrupt using minimal pins, a sort of 7->3 converter). A good question ... are 'solid state' relays always "better" ? Admittedly no contacts to wear out and quicker. DID encounter a situation once where the delay was a GOOD thing, made it possible to test a critical condition before the entire relay chain was engaged. Maybe not the best design strategy, but what was, was.

We used a lot of octal base 120 VAC ice cubes. One problem as solid state devices started to appear was the voltages and currents involved looked like dry circuits as far as the ice cubes were concerned. https://www.trafficsignalmuseum.com/pages/ef15.html There are photos of a stepper toward the bottom of the page. They were popular for industrial controls. Later models had pieces that you could snap onto the cams rather than breaking pieces off that saved disassembling the entire thing to replace a cam if you screwed up. Anyway hitting a limit switch would actuate the solenoid lifting the massive lead weight which would then drop rotating the drum one position bringing you to the next state. The company I worked for at the time went to a new design of vertical hydraulic press where the ram was in free fall until it hit a limit switch, closing a pilot operated check valve. Then the ram would be pumped down at a slow speed. In theory. It worked fine in our shop. When we set it up at the GE plant they filled it with hydraulic fluid that resembled squirrel piss. On the trial run the ram hit the limit switch, the stepper barely twitched, and the mold closed at full speed. Not good. I added a relay that was fast enough to react to the limit switch and would then actuate the stepper. After that fiasco we went entirely to relay logic and skipped the stepper. Footnote: years later and at another company we had a contract to build the controllers for the sequenced runway landing lights and I got to meet the stepper again. Since the GAO recently said the FAA is years behind modernizing I'm thinking those 50 year old steppers are still thunking away.

I've seen big mechanical 'steppers'. They have their uses. However there ARE alternatives and modifications. "Mechanical" systems have DELAYS - this can be good, made use of. Alas attempts to 'improve' them without proper understanding can also be a disaster. It's all designed as a "system", and 'upgrades' don't always get the nuances. > Footnote: years later and at another company we had a contract to build > the controllers for the sequenced runway landing lights and I got to meet > the stepper again. Alas the number of people who UNDERSTAND it and its reasons are now fewer and fewer. Kinda like those sci-fi things about old societies that run on tech that's near magic ... but nobody knows how it all WORKS anymore. First little flaw and it all crumbles. Back to sticks and stones IF you're lucky.

'Were' afaik. We did quite a bit of contract work for the GTE Sylvania lighting division in the '70s, but GTE started selling off visions in the early '80s and no longer exists as a company. I think the Sylvania brand name was sold and may be around. Another US success story. We got the contracts because the heavily unionized plant in Massachusetts couldn't make anything at a profit. Almost every company I was involved with in the '70s and '80s is dead and gone.
