In some cases like bond pricing the formulas date back to the 1920s or 1930s and were designed to be tractable with pencil and paper or a mechanical desk calculator. They often have strange simplifications like pretending every month has 30 days and the year has 360 days. I worked most of my life in banks, valuing financial instruments. We never used decimals, but to be fair I never worked on settlement systems. AIUI, the problem with decimals is that every time you want to use functions like exponential, you have to do a cast, and make a decision. Decisions hurt my head.

Derivatives trades became popular in the 1980s, as I recall. The need to operate in real time tended to rule out mainframes. I think NeXT machines were commonly used in that (niche) market, once they became available.

The Burroughs Medium systems, which supported operands of up to 100 decimal digits per operand provided superior support for financial fixed point calculation.

In second grade or whenever fractions are introduced one of the exercises was drawing lines to slice a pie into the required fractions. Trying to cut a pie into thirds upset me because it was so arbitrary compared to halves, quarters, etc.

If you need to represent rational numbers exactly, why not represent them as a pair of integers? I find the idea that 1/3 needs to be exact, but 1/7 doesn't, contrived.

I’m not aware of any hardware that builds it in, probably because the operations are easy to represent in terms of basic arithmetic on an underlying integer type. Until, that is, you exceed the range available in your integer type.

The curriculum said I had to teach the kids about base-60. The school used homogeneous grouping with the A, B, C, and D groups. A few of the A kids enjoyed playing with the concept. The D kids couldn't make change in base-10 but the syllabus was the syllabus.

Point of order: Yes, it had. It simply was a term of art in signal
processing, not in computer engineering.

I don’t think any of those other pre-System/360 machines offered both long (multicharacter) word lengths and character addressability. The initial meaning of “byte” was actually “bitfield”.
