Those things are not comparable. IBM 1401 has resonably fast card
reader, many installations had tapes and/or a disc. On home computers
frequently the only mass storage was cassete tape. On ZX Spectrum
cassete was somewhat faster than 100 bytes per second, this is
about 1/10 of speed of 1401 card reader. And several home computers
had slower cassete interface than Spectrum. So normal tactic
on home computers was to keep everthing in RAM and use one-pass
compiler. And Pascal on ZX Spectrum needed 25 kB RAM. Compilers
on 1401 were multi-pass and used external storage.
Also, we expect progressively more from compilers. As a student
I started with ICL Fortran. But in the next semester the course
moved to IBM 360 compatibles and IBM Fortran. Suddenly things
that did work in ICL Fortran no longer worked, in particular IBM
allowed only very simple expressions as array indices, while ICL
allowed arbitrary expressins. Early compiler allowed only very
short varisble/subroutine names, forcing use of obscure names.
Instruction set also have influence: 1401 looks easy to program,
but instructions tend to be somewhat long. Z80 instructions are
shorter, but to do anything one needs many istructions, so program
actually tend to be longer. On Z80 something like p-code may
be attractive to make programs smaller.

Yes, that was an formidable beast. iirc it had so much RAM to perform a FFT you had to write partial products to tape, rewind, and take another pass. The experience was so rewarding that it was close to 10 years with the advent of microcontrollers that I became interested in programming.

Hisoft Pascal for ZX Spectrum had about 25 kB of code. ARM code
tends to be more compact than Z80 code so something of similar
complexity should fit. However this was really Pascal subset
and compiler generated code was not very good. There is also
question of RAM use, with 16kB of RAM there should be enough
space, but MCU-s with 32 kB flash may have only 2KB RAM which
is quite thight for a compiler. Note that with normal compiled
languages you need space for source code and compiler symbol
table. And space for object code (object code may go to flash,
but compiler must leave enough free flash for this). It is
preferable to have incremental compiler. But then symbol
table must be part of running program. In effect you end up
with something that on the surface may be quite different
but internally is like Forth compiler. Also, besides compiler
you need a some support library. Forth was organised in
a way that compiler/interpreter routines simultanously served
as a library for the user.
In a different spirit, modern MCU-s contain inside a lot of
devices. If you want nice symbolic constants helping with
use of devices you need extra space (kilobytes or tens of
kilobytes for all devices). And one wants library of
routines handling devices. So really a lot of things
competing for use of those 32 kB of flash.

It seems that you do not know what you are talking about. Most
embedded systems are small single chip ones. Smallest chips
on the market are something like 64 bytes of RAM and 1 kB flash.
IMO those make sense if you have simple problem which fits
without making special effort (or maybe you have huge volume).
If you are using Micro-Python your program, however simple
will not fit into such chip. Forth _may_ fit but you need
to make effort to get small version of Forth. Next interesting
point are chips with 2-4 kB RAM and 16kB flash. Those are
popular chips availale for 10-30 cents in quantity and few
times more in small volume. For hobbists interesting point
is STM32F103C8T6. It has 20 kB RAM and 64 kB flash. Boards
with this chip (or chinese clones of it) are available at
aroud $2 from chinese sellers. This is cheap enough to put
such board as part of a design and handling such board is
much easier than building own circuit with the chip. There
are bigger chips, but tendency is for much higher price
when you need more RAM. In classic MCU-s 1MB of RAM means
_very_ big and expensive chip. This is mainly because
MCU normally need logic parts (like processor core), analog
circuits (ADC-s and/or comparators), static RAM and flash.
Apparently it is tricky to get all of those into a single
process and bigger static RAM tends to take a lot of chip
area. There are now new "chips" which use multi-die
technology. For example RP2040 has flash on separate die
allowing much larger RAM compared to single die version.
Once you want more than 1MB RAM it makes sense to use exteral
RAM. And for larger amount one probably would prefer DRAM.
If you use DRAM, then smallest sensible amount is probably
16 MB. There is a chip on the market containing 1GHz core
and 64MB DRAM (this probably is two-die chip). One can
get boards with this chip at about twice of cost of
RP2040 board. Note that RP2040 has its own flash, while
the board with bigger chip needs extra flash or SD-card.
SD-card adds cost and at least cheap SD-cards tends to
be unreliable, so you may be pushed to more expensive
technology like eMMC.
Beside cost of the MCU chip there is also board cost. Small
chips can be put on simple cheap boards. More advanced chips
tends to require more advanced boards which may be more expensive,
especially in small quantities.
Concerning two-die chips, they are attractive for low-cost
gadgets, but may be problematic in real-time context.
Namely, flash access in such chips is _much_ slower than
in single-die chips. This may be partially compensated
using caches, on average such chips perform quite well.
But worst case time may be many times longer than best
case and it gets much harder to provide any warranty on
execution time.
For embedded chips cost is not the only factor. Namely, many
embedded devices use battery power. More processor cycles
and more data read from RAM and flash means more power
drain. To have reasonable battery life one needs efficient
program and a small chip.

One product I worked on used the 8749, 128 bytes of RAM and a 2K EPROM. There were actually two handheld products, pH and ion concentration. The custom display was different but they both used Ross electrodes for measurements. There wasn't enough room to do the math for both applications. I pretty much knew every byte by name and it was all assembler. The Forth projects used the Z-80 or TMS9900 and you had all the room in the world. Forth was great for creating a project specific interface. With care in creating the words something approaching a natural language interface was possible. As you say in the real world there are many engineering decisions to be made and the suitable programming language is one of them.

Most of the projects I've seen aren't stressing the processor so MicroPython or CircuitPython work fine. A duty cycle that's pretty close on a PWM output, for examole, is good enough. It's interesting Arduino basically started with C++. Th UNO doesn't have the resources for MicroPython. https://circuitpython.org/downloads That's CircuitPython but clise enough. If you filter by Arduino it's mostly the Nano boards. https://circuitpython.org/downloads?manufacturers=Arduino CircuitPython tends to be more customized particularly in the Adafruit products but it doesn't have the _thread module. It's still experimental but appeared to work on the Pico. There is no shortage of choices in the maker world. I really hope it gains strength and gets people closer to hardware. It's come a long way from the basic AVR or PIC stuff.

You missed 2 points:
1) Mecrisp is a native compiler. I do not think it optimizes as
well as gcc, but slowdown is smaller than threaded code and
size is comparable.
2) Key words above were "interactive system" and in particular
interactive debugging. Unfortunately some embedded systems
have only expensive closed source debuggers. For RP2040 in
principle one should be able to get open source debugger,
but RP2040 have/had trouble with compatibilty: you needed
matched patched versions of tools and a second RP2040 to
work as debugging interface.
Makers of RP2040 intend it as Micro-Python board, but AFAIK
Micro-Python is much slower and larger than Forth.

This is not ubiquitous though, many microcontroller projects may still have to deal with very very tight resources/speed. Still, for MOST uses I'd rec a good 'C' compiler and/or some ASM. 'C' compilers can be VERY tight these days if you set all the right flags, maybe tighter than some hand-coded ASM. Of course something like the PIC-12x series are too tiny for even FORTH. But if you want/need an interpreter ... FORTH may still be your best choice for such environments. Even MicroPython is a fat pig compared to FORTH. I like the Pic12x units because you can program them to emulate two or three of the (faster) 74HC logic chips, add a little pre-processing IQ for even cheaper than the 74HC chips. ANYway, I'd say there may still be some joy in FORTH ... if you're open to the experience.

It was totaled by a snowplow in the same month Japan was facing a meltdown. I took what I could get, which was an automatic. I traded it for a 2018 in 2020. I got a good deal on the leftover and Toyota doesn't make the Yaris anymore. Even that year the sedan was really a Mazda 2, with a different engine than the hatchback. Oh, and all three bikes are manual. About 20 years ago I was selling a Yamaha Seca and my boss expressed interest until he found out it wasn't an automatic. I was relieved. I'll be honest and admit with the VW you rarely used the stump puller gear so it was effectively an 8 speed. After my father died my mother wanted to buy a new car. She was 70 at the time and I had to convince her she could drive an automatic. She'd been driving since 1921 and never had driven one. Even in the '60s manual were hard to find but my father didn't like automatics.
