The woke crowd are too busy trying to get people to use "they"
as a gender-neutral third-person _singular_ pronoun. Arrghh...
Obviously there isn't a single competent system designer
among them. If we need such a pronoun (and I'm not disputing
that we do), it's time for something brand new. I've heard
someone suggest "xie", with "xis" as the possessive and "xir"
or "xim" as an object. (You could use "xir" for direct object
and "xim" for indirect object, but that's just a flashback to
German grammar classes from years ago. Nominative, genitive,
dative, accusative...)

It ("They") has been used as a third-person singular pronoun
for more than six hundred years.

Perhaps, but people have often used constructs like "he or she"
instead. (Alternatively, "he/she" or "(s)he". My favourite
parody of the Political Correctness movement is "s/h/it".)

Screw that. Trump just declared that men are men
and women are women and there's NO halfway, much
   less "just because you SAY".

   Americans DO understand the plural.

What they do NOT understand anymore is the use
of irregular verbs. "Pleaded" instead of "pled".
"Runned" instead of "ran". It's annoying.

Mostly "just plain dumb" alas .... :-)

China still, Czech - last I heard (HAND-made). Russia
makes SOME, but I doubt you can get them now due to
   war sanctions.

Mostly, tubes/valves are in the domain of the
kinda wealthy 'philes. They ARE "better" for
audio ... but for Average Joe they're just kinda
out of reach and Joe doesn't really GET why they
   are better. What, 50 watts ? I can buy a class-D
   with 500 for a lot less .........

I've got a couple of relatively low-power monobloks
someone gave me. Haven't yet put them into use. The
main prob is efficient speakers. Sure as hell can't
use them with magneplanars. Best match is kinda like
Klipsch ... which make good use of input power. Forget
the WalMart/BestBuy fake versions - the real ones are
   thousands of US dollars.

Haven't seen much on the 'point emitter' valves
   recently. Not enough market ?

They ARE maybe the better evolution ... run cool,
low-power, long life, but with the same harmonic
and overload characteristics as olde-tyme valves.

Actually its very easy, but you do need to run a bigger power sipply to
do it which increases expense.

Well I dunno, but my local valve (tube) supplier has dozens of makes of
the commonly used audio ones

https://www.watfordvalves.com/

Well yes, Its all stupid hype really.

I spent nearly 15 years designing audio gear. Today a modern transistor
amplifier can easily exceed any valve amplifier for hifi performance,
and as far as guitars go, you can emulate and exceed valve performance
for less weight and cost quite easily.

Ive side by sided a CD player and vinyl, and the CD vastly exceeds the
vinyl in quality

But people believe what their prejudices tell them long after the
instruments tell them they are talking shit

My cousin made a good living building valve amps for people with more
money than sense.

If you are looking for quality *loud* loudspeakers, go for metal horns
above about 800 Hz. Low distortion at high power and extended frequncy
range makes the sound 'detailed'

You don't have much option below that except some kind of round or
elliptical speaker - and to be honest just buy good high quality magnet
types.

Below about 200Hz is big, stiff good magnets and a very solid box.

Again most of what goes into the hifi market is overhyped crap. Building
a good studio monitor takes money and skill and people are not prepared
to pay for that and nor do they actually notice the difference anyway.
Especially on rock music

When CDs first came out, our local FM station really hyped them.
"Lasers on long play" they called it whenever they played a CD
instead of a vinyl record. Everyone conveniently ignored the
fact that the limitations of FM transmission would swamp out
any differences between the media. And then one day one of
their precious indestructible CDs skipped. I laughed out loud.

Remember the TV ads where the advertiser would talk about how much
better their sets looked - while showing it to you on your old set?

Time to build a good old bass reflex box. Efficient too...

Indeed. Remember "Monster Cables"?

Even worse, the last thing most of them want is the good clean
sound a monitor will give you. They want lots of boom - so many
PAs are set up with a huge broad peak centered at about 250 Hz.

In terms of PA systems it is almost impossible to get efficiency AND
good LF performance.
A 30 foot concrete horn in a cinema type installation is good, and, if
organ music or a bowed bass is your listening pleasure, labyrinth type
will go down to around 80Hz.
But if its bass drums or a bass guitar, you need a lot of power and a
large surface area. And no reverse wave at all if possible. Enormous
impractical horn best, Infinite baffle second best, bass reflex third
best ...
Serried ranks of loudspeakers in a wall configuration works pretty well.
You always need the most power for the bass loudspeakers for this very
reason. Its very hard to get the efficiency up.

Another thong mots people do NOT realise is how much louder a good
magnet or horn design makes a loudspeaker, and how little louder
upping amplifier power makes it

10W=> 100W is just 10dB.  A loudspeaker going from 85dB/W to 105dB/W is
100 times more 'powerful'

Most humans don't do dB ... don't intuitively get
the scale. You SELL stereo gear using WATTS, even
if the system is inefficient. Love those ads for
1000+ watt class-d amps for cars. They DO make
the whole car body buzz, can hear it for a mile,
but 'fidelity' ... umm ... young folk don't care.

Had some magneplanar speakers ... they were NOT
efficient (superb transparent sound though). But
to get any volume you really needed 200-300 watts.
To get low bass you still needed dedicated subs.
If I listen to Bach I want those pedals to vibrate
the spleen just like sitting with a proper pipe
organ. The first subharmonics/beats from those things
is infrasonic, makes the music 'visceral'.

   Have some donated tube/valve mono-blok amps ...
40 watts I think. I've heard them, superior,
but these days it's hard to find speakers
efficient enough for such low wattage. Only
Klipsh seems to offer a solution, but the
   real ones are thousands .....

Hey, the car body is buzzing. What more do you want?

As for watts, marketroids love inflating those numbers.
Good old RMS watts don't sound nearly as impressive as
peak power (twice as many "watts"). And then there are
all sorts of other fabricated numbers, up to 8 or 10 times
the RMS power.

Ya know ... I used to be kinda 'outraged' by how
   advertisers warped reality.

   But NOW, I'm kinda fascinated.

Find a 1950s book - "The Technological Society"
by Jacques Ellul. By "tech" he didn't really mean
computers and such. 'Technique' mostly referred
to detailed scientific investigations in the 40s/50s
about how humans thought/decided, mostly sponsored
by biz interests (mostly). Amazon still sells it :

https://www.amazon.com/Technological-Society-Jacques-Ellul/dp/0394703901/ref=sr_1_1?adgrpid=1345802804092734&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.g2w5n3qWUvmau99HIZJjJ_2HuuGyIFaKcpKQQsE3Wyjw5Ol_BvztY-h6ErEoqETkNTKqH1Q20LwNpgRiiz7rcJjR5t_jrDgDQnXQ8EhxX0PYofoW3vunWgT0ktIcAviV5Vh76Sv2wvUITFvOkVQrNZPckXj0VcEz9I-wccABuAEjjdXXDN_oSKDyejta1KfNclMGPxEM1afKF4MbeieDw7F4wQXzS1KjzIoWIDu2Y7M.GkCsQCTJo1s9DGbwEjd1JF_ekxnfXecnY2mzY1pVyZM&dib_tag=se&hvadid=84112913820532&hvbmt=bp&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=71593&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=p&hvtargid=kwd-84113035273301%3Aloc-190&hydadcr=8267_13501948&keywords=technological+society+ellul&mcid=1ae4528eff0a3399abf6f19b6fe144e2&msclkid=04b8e4c235911c79afcf8310488a8336&qid=1741847839&sr=8-1

(note the French->English can be a bit difficult
   sometimes)

That era was maybe the first time SERIOUS effort was
put into qualifying/quantitizing how to bullshit humans.

And they mostly got it right.

GOT my old copy of the book. Kinda re-read bits of it
   from time to time.

'Man and Technics' Spengler
'The Question Concerning Technology' Heidegger

Spengler was writing in the aftermath of WWI, Elul and Heidegger of WWII.
Spengler was prescient concerning the spread of technology to Asia.

Ellul constantly used the term "technique" - ie
   well-defined/quantified methods. It's not quite
the same as "technology" ... which by the 20th
   was associated with electric/electronic and
   eventually computational.

Anyway, Madison Avenue and friends put HUGE money and
effort into finding the best ways to bullshit the most
people most of the time. They kinda turned it into a
science. More modern tricks like micro-monitoring
brainwaves and pupil dilation were available by the
1980s. The FANTASTIC amount of money involved made it
   all worth it.

Turn on the TV ... listen to the "Wegovy Crusade
March" (and just ignore the 99 horrible side-effects
   they briefly zip through !).

I'm so sick of it I instantly change channels when
   it comes on .........

Seems like most modern meds have a HUGE list of
horrible side-effects ... like yer dick rotting
off from Jardiance infections. Maybe the old
docs "two aspirin" advice wasn't far off ......
all my old relatives who stuck to that lived
the best and longest, and Granny never ate veggies
for 99 years (inherited her taste buds) - she was
just northern euro boiled beef & taters and a beer
or two, sharp to the end .......

In a couple months I have to break-in a new doc.
Don't know what the previous put in his notes.
I've gotta re-explain/justify staying as clear
of "modern med" as possible ... and I do have
stories about relatives who rotted and died from
getting on their bandwagon. Gotta be NICE about
it however. INTENTIONALLY didn't get corp health
insurance because of this. If you don't have a
bottomless well they'll suddenly find reasons why
you don't NEED all those zillion test$/procedures/meds.

Gimme a Doc-In-The-Box any day ... specific issue,
   specific simple fix.

Unfortunately I know the difference between not taking the meds and
taking them - side effects and all.

I've worked with my 'doc' to maximise benefit and minimise the side
effects, so that its not a just a question of prolonging a miserable
existence, alone.

But its 8 pills a day, plus vitamin D in the winter and antihistamines
in the summer and a steroid inhaler twice a day.

And that only stops things getting worse.

In the UK its a different scenario. People are getting lawyered up and
if the GP *doesn't* send you on all those tests and you *do* end up with
some unspotted cancer, they are in the shit.

They have a prescribed methodology.

As my practice chief said "in this case we normally do this immediately,
then send you off for those tests, and continue treatment on the basis
of what those test shows, or pass you over to the appropriate hospital
department if something bad shows up".

I think there isn't an orifice in my body they haven't shoved a camera
down - or worse - up... My whole body has been scanned. Apart from my
brain arms and legs. I get blood tests around 4 times a year at the
moment at the behest of various departments that are 'on my case'.

I appreciate all this, because unlike so many of my friends, I am still
alive.

Not in great health, but alive.

It's really very, very hard to get the balance right. A lot of what is
prescribed is prophylactic. Taking it statistically improves your
chances of survival, but its a very blunt instrument, is statistics.

Take Statins. I hated them and couldn't tolerate them and had 4 heart
operations before they gave me something I could tolerate - a self
administered jab of something very expensive every fortnight, that is
trivially easy. My heart arteries haven't clogged up since, so it seems
to work.

You just have to roll the dice between stuff that leads to a totally
miserable existence - beta blockers for example make you an impotent wet
rag of a human with no get up and go. But you wont die of an
overstressed heart. And stuff whose side effects are tolerable. Like
nitroglycerin in its various medical forms. Gives you a headache a bit
but stops you having a heart attack.

I have over the last ten years reduced what I take to stuff that helps
and doesn't make me feel shit, The latest one was a blood thinner that
covered me in bruises, made my nose bleed and was generally shite. I am
now 15% more likely to have a stroke, but wounds now heal.

You need to quietly take control from the doctors and understand their
motivations and modify what they give you to get what you want. A long
life as a tranked up bumbling mentally confused idiot is not it.

In the end it is your decision and if you explain why - quality of life
- you don't want to take stuff and you do accept the risks, well that's OK

They are beholden to you to explain what the drugs do, and their side
effects too.
So doctors should not dictate to you, but you are a fool if you don't
listen.

cabinets of the Altec A-7 design from the drawings and measurements
photocopied from a library book. While they weren't King Klipsch,
they did quite nicely on the title track of Chuck Mangione's
"Children of Sanchez" soundtrack, Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the
Moon", Isao Tomita's "The Planets", and many others with 25-50W
per channel (home designed and built amp). The drivers were rather
low quality relative to real Altec drivers, but they did okay.

Oh, the third speaker was center, L+R, and relative gain carefully
adjusted for optimum imaging. The center speaker was the one I
used for the yearly candle-puffing ceremony. The kick drum on
Chicago's "Saturday in the Park" would puff out a small candle
placed just in front of the woofer cone.

Sadly, had to sell two of the three to a movie theater a few
years later.

Inspired by an article in a hi-fi magazine, a friend bought a
third speaker and we hooked it across the hot terminals of the
other two, so it got a L-R signal. We put it behind us, and got
all sorts of interesting effects. The Poco album "Crazy Eyes"
had a note on the cover: "Some banjo and dobro tracks may cancel
if played in mono." On our three-speaker setup, the banjo walked
right around behind us.

Ha Ha ... all sorts of sensory-deception tricks
   are possible.

But, remember the huge "quadraphonic" sales BS in
the 70s/80s ? I think "Quadraphrenia" was named
   for it.

It NEVER lived up to the hype - just More Expensive.

Have a good CD of an R.E.M. album that, one song,
features the sound of a manual typewriter at the
start. On good, magneplanar, speakers the
realism was just CONVINCING to the extreme,
   almost shocking.

Alas those speakers used a cheap glue to stick
the wires to the plastic membranes - and the
glue eventually FAILS. NOT good. Did find a
"how to fix" tutorial, but it's EXTENSIVE work.

Moved to Vandersteens for awhile, then kinda
lost interest in ultra-hi-fi. Besides, my
penchants for magnum pistols and motorcycles
kinda degraded the old eardrums. Was 20->24000
in my youth (flyback transformer noise was
   nasty) but no more.

I remember the records when 'stereo' was first coming on the market that
would create the impression of a freight train driving through the living
room.

It might be my ears or my less than stellar sound systems but it seems
some of the more pronounced effects of the '60s have been toned down. A
the time I had a decent turntable, amp, and speakers I'd built. I think it
was one of the Rolling Stone songs that starts with a car horn. A friend
who I was demoing the system to thought it was somebody out in the
driveway.

Like you I got into ear protection at the range and motorcycle helmets a
little too late in life. Even in my youth I recognized some of the high
frequencies audiophiles oohed over would benefit the cat more than me.
