I don't WANT to use the same syntax to add two strings together as to add two numbers. I found that out in JavaScript where a comparison between a string "1" and a number 1 failed on IE but worked on Firefox. I had found an 'undefined' gap in the language. In C you are absolutely aware at all times what type of object you are dealing with and if you move to another one it's via an explicit cast. Or if implicit, you normally get a compiler warning. In C if you want to deallocate RAM you say so. It doesn't silently collect garbage under your feet and take a millisecond to do it Javascript silently just does what it *thinks* you meant. And gets it wrong. In short there is a layer of uncertainty built into modern languages that attempt to map abstract compsci concepts into actual procedural code. Which is why C is probably still the most popular language. -- If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. Operator overloading is in fact very useful. It allows you to build what’s called “Domain-Specific Languages”, to allow you to express the concepts of the problem you’re solving more naturally. That’s my interpretation, too. But all too commonly you will come across
“procedural” used as some kind of synonym for “not OO”.
My interpretation is: “functional” -- “evaluates to a value”; “procedural”
-- “has some effect on machine/world state”.
The languages I like are primarily procedural, but also allow for useful
functional constructs.

So Perl and PHP use the dot operator like you specify, Python and
JavaScript use addition.
The nice thing about the Python syntax is that it logically leads to the
idea of multiplication being used to repeat strings:
"I say " + 3 * "hello " + "to you all"
evaluates to
'I say hello hello hello to you all'

Except it was never “PERL”, always “Perl”.

Python manages with the same operator, but because it doesn’t do implicit
conversion between strings and numbers, this reduces the chance for
trouble.
This is why, unlike JavaScript and PHP, Python has no need for a “===”
operator.

C++ has inheritance; Dog goes 'woof' Cat goes 'meow'. My edition is old but Stroustrp's book was a lot more restrained than what most C++ programming books presented.

It is the method that Python uses <http://python-history.blogspot.com/2010/06/method-resolution-order.html>; I suppose the reason why C++ can’t adopt it is it would break backward compatibility or something.

I was generally happier to do a bit of extra code, reimplementing a conflicted interface than I would be having to understand a clever linearization (total ordering). However I never developed libraries and so so these concepts may be less important for me. If there is a significant difference that requires new terms such as monotonic. And, ... that is all hugely easier than considering if this might be a good thing to do in code. Above my pay grade.

As practising software engineers we specialised in 'good clean workmanlike well documented and structured code'. Our job was to get the puter to do its job in the most understandable and maintainable way. Not to impress people with the elegance complexity and incomprehensibility of our REGEX statements. If all we had was vi and a C compiler, that's what we used. And knowing that p=(x>y?3:2); produced identical assembler to: if (x>y) p=3; else p=2; there was a strong temptation to use the latter as being sufficiently simple for the time serving amateurs whose failure to complete the project was why we we employed at all... I set a worm to munch out a tunnel with the limitations being it must never eat a hole to the existing tunnel, or the spaces walls. Except at the maze exit. So at every coordinate, it randomly picked a direction, and tried to munch. If it couldn't munch it would try another direction. If there was no possible direction, it exited the recursed function. If there was a possible new coordinate, it called itself with the new co-ordinates. I think that is the *only* time I have used it. Its very good for exploring all possibilities until they prove futile. That's probably why CompSci like it,.
