That's my problem. I can think up all sorts of complex solutions involving MCUs but then I ask myself why bother? I could use a system like that to detect when the cat wants to come in but she has learned to knock. Problem solved. I could have a remote device measuring temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, light intensity, wind speed, and so forth that would come up on the WiFi as a web server so I could browse to it but walking out on the deck works too.

A (very small) reed switch is probably the easiest solution. Trips a latch on the transmitter board and that runs until the supercaps go dry. Only need a few secs. DO own some quite small samarium magnets. Better for outdoor use. The PV solution WOULD be nice ... and I did figure out how to do the delta value thing simply ... but some old PV devices I remember from the 60s just don't exist anymore. Those were 1/4" screw-ins with a few *TINY* PV chips ... 0-5v. Very low MA, but that's not relevant. No such thing anymore. Searched on 'sensors' extensively. As noted elsewhere, the wiring CAN'T be in any way obvious or else the postman will worry the box has been rigged to explode. The PV solution into one of the underside vent holes WAS most inobvious. Considered using the box as part of an RC resonance circuit ... but RAIN would screw that up. >> >> https://learn.adafruit.com/pir-passive-infrared-proximity-motion-sensor/ >> using-a-pir-w-arduino >> >> The receiver in the how could blink LEDs, buzz, or whatever. For real sex >> you could use neopixels for a pulsating rainbow effect. No rainbows ! Nothing obvious ! Just a clean FM tone for a few secs. Maybe 50-100mw would do. A few transistors, soda-straw inductor/transformer .... >> https://www.adafruit.com/category/168

LONG back you could have a PV cell device in 1/4" format that could produce about five volts. Might have been made for NASA. Can't find anything like that now. The idea of the PV is that it creates its OWN power. Anything else, CdS or whatever, requires constant power to work. DID kind a solve the 'rate change' detector ... it requires a cap and couple high-val resistors. If the cell sees positive change then it surges power, which gets through the cap. This is enough to trip a 'start' on the transmitter. Does not matter if the light was low or higher, the CHANGE is what the circuit transmits. If > 0.7 v ....... Anyway, still looking for the right parts. May NOT really exist anymore alas. However any SMALL 5v PV array ... 1cm cells in a flat linear setup ... may still do the trick discretely. DID consider using the entire mailbox as a 'C' in a resonant circuit ... but RAIN would screw that up. It's really a kinda evil problem. Again, can't make any of the tech large/obvious ........

You might find something at > > https://www.solarbotics.com/product-category/equipment/power-supplies/ > solar-cells OK site ... however what I was referring to were made as SENSORS, not power-production. Had a few when I was young, got 'em from a surplus store. 1/4-20? threaded tube body with a clear window at the end. Looking into the window there were a collection of TEENY-WEENIE silicon blue PV chips, maybe 10 or 12, barely more than specks. With a FET high-impedance meter you could see they'd generate about 0-5v in bright sun. Likely about a milliamp. Never saw much use for them, except as a curiosity, until now. I *think* they were made for NASA, custom order maybe. They likely paid $1000 each for 'em ... I bought 'em for like 50 cents :-) A more modern take would be a rolled-up flexible PV sheet inside instead of discrete silicon. Pour in epoxy and you've got yer sensor, maybe slightly more milliamps. Sheet something like : https://www.mldevices.co.uk/high-efficiency-flexible-solar-sheets/ but with smaller individual cells. Anyway, looks like I'm NOT gonna find 'em anymore. The transmitter, a small amorphous PV hidden under the box, getting reflected light. Has awhile to charge the super-caps. I'll keep thinking about it ... need 200' range and no outside power or batts and ultra-low visible profile. The box mounts to a piece of 2x6 ... can pull that off and route a two or three inch groove in it without compromising intended function. That's room for some electronics. Do have a zoom camera that can see the box, but the chance of actually seeing the mail truck stop for 10 seconds ....... AH ! Solar-powered pocket calculators ! They have a very small thin PV strip, can power an LCD calc even in room-level light. SOME surplus place has a bunch of those !!! More Google fun ! May even have some in my old-junk boxes .......

Some org always donates a calendar to me ... or six, or ten ............ along with the 'send us money' form :-) That's old human psych, offer a tiny 'gift' then, morally, you're obligated to give the sender a much larger return. Anyway, those calculator PVs sound Good Enough for what I want to do. Small, very thin, enough power, easy to conceal. Just gotta dig around. Dip 'em ... first in epoxy and then in clear silicone. That oughtta hold up for many years. Stick it to the top inside surface of the box ... basically invisible to the postman. The delta detector - simple. Maybe a 100-500k resistor shorting the PV cell - plus a small CAP. SLOW small changes, the resistor will bleed off the charge. Faster change, the resistor won't cope and you'll get a pulse through the cap - enough to trigger an activation switch on the transmitter board. An FET wired to self-latch will do it. When the supercaps die, the whole thing resets. All coming into focus .......

The original Tom Swift books date to before Curtiss, so that Tom Swift's
airplane (or was it still aeroplane?) used wing warping.

Ailerons were by far the better solution. Kinda surprised the Wright's didn't think of them. Far more mechanically simple than warping. Oh well, you can't think of *everything* .... Ah, if they'd only had FORTRAN to work all the fine numbers :-) The Wrights once caught Curtiss "spying" on their plane ... but he really wasn't trying to steal the design, instead noting where it sucked. Was watching a doc the other day ... seems that Rolls, of Rolls-Royce fame, was the first person in the UK to buy a Wright Flyer. 200+ flights, even 1st across the Channel. Then he fatally crashed it ....... Very light planes - no matter the control method - just are not great in gusty winds. Try to land a C-150 in a gusty crosswind sometime - you HAVE to stay right on TOP of it or ELSE. Once landed a Cessna when a huge headwind gust came up when I was just four or five feet above the runway. QUICKLY 'flew' it down because in a few secs the headwind would stop and I've had had zero airspeed. Instead, landed at zero GROUND speed. Freaky. In distant retrospect I was the only kid they'd rent a plane on gusty days - had a knack for it. Ah ... "Tom Swift and his Air Glider -or- Seeking the Platinum Treasure" (1912). Found 'em on archive.org Never read any Tom Swifts ... See Russians are involved ... Vlad loves his platinum too.

For whatever reason the stretch of road south of Carson City NV can be pretty windy. I watched a bird land who, I don't think you could call it negative ground speed, was rather surprised when he was going backwards at touchdown. Not very graceful. I also watched a raven playing in the wind breaking over a ridge line. He had zero ground speed and was happily gliding about six feet off the ground. He would slowly lose altitude and give a couple of flaps to get back up. No wonder humans spend centuries asking "Why can't we do that?"

If I find myself in such a position I get the power on _fast_. My favourite wind gust story was when I was landing a Cessna 170 (tail-dragger) on a 12-foot-wide paved strip. I was doing a wheel landing and was happily rolling along on the mains with the tail still in the air when a side gust blew me right off the strip and onto the grass alongside. There followed a lot of quick delicate up-elevator to stop the increased drag of the grass from tipping me up on my nose. > Better than the birds. While I did some snorkeling as a kid I regrettably never got as far as scuba. I guess the door isn't closed in the US. When Leni Riefenstahl took up diving at 70+ she had to lie about her age to be certified. There's an extra twist around here -- technically it's all altitude diving.

If I find myself in > such a position I get the power on _fast_. Wouldn't have been TIME. The little Cessna planes did not have afterburners. ONLY fix, almost reflexive, was to 'fly' the headwind and put the thing on the runway QUICK. The huge headwind literally lasted just five or six SECONDS - enough to drag back the plane to what WOULD have been zero airspeed. Wonder if an 'AI' could have figured it ? > My favourite wind gust story was when I was landing a Cessna 170 > (tail-dragger) on a 12-foot-wide paved strip. Digging the prop into the runway is a biggie. >> Better than the birds. For whatever reason the stretch of road south of >> Carson City NV can be pretty windy. Oh, fish are GOOD ... evolved for the environment. Humans, despite tech, can only roughly emulate. Coolest dive I ever did - a 300+ foot deep sinkhole. Twin 100cf steelies plus an emergency tank - the full redundant cave rig. Like dropping into infinite space. Hmmmmmm ... I tend to think I've led a very boring life, but, in retrospect, I've done some VERY weird, edge, stuff without having any of that double-alpha personality. Amazing I survived. Circling sharks in bloody water, I'll tell you how to best a huge bear with naught but a Colt 45 sometime. 220 knots at 2 feet altitude, jumping sand piles over an unfinished interstate section ......... you could get away with a lot more in the 60s/70s before omnipresent surveillance .....
