I am not sure what you find obscure? ARM assembly is a pretty
conventional assembly. Somewhat nasty is limited range of
constants and offsets. Thumb subset is reduced and depending
on exact dialect may lack some instructions which are present
on other machines. Also, Cortex M0 (quite popular target)
theoretically has 15 usable registers, but in practice it is
more like 8 general purpose registers + stack pointer + link
register.
Using assembly from Micro Python leads to somewhat different syntax,
it that bothers you use it normal assembly.
I would say that every IBM mainfaimer should feel at home
using ARM assembly: ARM lacks baroque things like SS instructions,
but core is similar.

The thumb assembly itself is not obscure. However I'm not aware of many uses in general Python for embedded assembler similar to C's asm keyword usage. The PDP-1 was indeed a different architecture from the other 18 bit family, but
the PDP-4 was a subset of the PDP-7 was a subset of the PDP-9 was a subset of
the PDP-15. That's pretty fucking consistent to my way of thinking...

The DEC computer engineering book says so and it's clear if you compare the artchitectures. Just like the -5 and -8, the -4 had a single accumulator and a link bit, single level indirect addressing, and an instruction set that included JMS JMP TAD ISZ AND instructions just like the PDP-5/8, a very similar microcoded operate instruction, and auto-index locations 10-17. Interrupts did a JMS 0. The I/O instructions had a similar structure. The 18 bit machines could address all of memory directly so the current page/page 0 addressing hack was new for the PDP-5. Take a look at the architecture manuals. In the PDP-4, "all of memory" is
4096KW, which is to say, 12 bits worth. The rest of the instruction is a 5 bit
opcode and a 1 bit indirection indicator.
With the indirection indicator alone one can build a follow on with 8KW (like
the PDP-7), and clever programming takes care of things.
Later systems have index registers...

I did my first programming on a PDP-8, often through the console switches. From what I remember from 50 years ago, The idea of defining different-sized bytes is a real plus. Pity it was limited to word boundaries, or it would have been actual BitBlt instructions. Several machines use byte pointers in memory - Honeywell 6000 EIS instructions, and I believe XDS Sigma. Quite flexible once you’re used to it. -- Pete

With the move to 64-bit addressing, I’ve often felt that it was a missed opportunity to reserve the bottom 3 bits for a bit offset within a byte. That way, you could have arbitrary bitfield addressing available, without any change to the pointer format. Of course it would only be available in a select few instructions (e.g. “load bitfield”, “store bitfield”); other memory-referencing instructions would either ignore those bottom 3 bits or insist they be zero.

Look up the original definition of "byte" in the signal processing literature,
and you'll find that "arbitrary bitfield" is the original meaning, dude.
The restriction of "byte" to "bitfield of a particular size for the manufacturer's
architecture, especially 8 bits" is the odd choice.
