I had the impression that there could be a path that could well reconcile your idea of a "strict mode" with the existing standard. I even started liking the idea, but you didn't even reply to that. And I think you are somehow fixing on VLA, they are not the major problem for your proposal. The thing is that the C comunity will not swallow ABI changes easily. In C the responsibility for checking function parameters is at the calling side. This is not likely to change. Introducing size information into some sort of "augmented pointers" through the backdoor of references will be taken as what it is, ABI change. Jens
