I didn't wanted to imply that the dynamic check shouldn't be done. My idea was just that the compile time check would be easier to do and incur no runtime penalty at all (almost by definition of a compile time check :) For the penalty of the dynamic check there are two things to consider. The first is the additional branch instruction, I agree that this should be minimal as you say because the correct branch could easily predicted. (But a lot of people would insist that they don't want this, I guess, by fear of having a penalty.) What is perhaps more important, is that such a feature might hinder certain optimizations. If you have a VLA for which sizeof is never used the implicit size "variable" that is hidden somewhere could be optimized out. Jens
