E.g that nesting such constructs could clash into a shift operator, and that these guys are not parenthesis for the preprocessor? But perhaps before going on syntax, I think the semantics of such a thing are not quite delivered yet. If bound-checking (or more generally bound enforcement) is really the primary goal of this proposal, perhaps John could elaborate more precisely on his strict mode. Preferably by trying to argue inside the current C standard, and how this would impact VLA, or more generally VM types. My guess that all this could be done without all the sugar of references, auto-types and stuff like that. John, I also wonder if you are aware that the current standard has a normative annex K that is called "Bounds-checking interfaces". This is mostly about replacing library functions, but it also introduces the interesting concept of "Runtime-constraint violations". Jens
