Yes, it took a while, but I finally found a reliable source that 
confirms what you say.

Page 4 mentions the addition of double precision to "address the needs 
of scientific and high-performance computing (HPC) applications"

That was in 2008.

Funny how history repeats.  Around 1985 I worked for a small array 
processor start up that had spun off from Floating Point Systems.  Both 
companies made floating point attached processors for the big iron 
machines, the equivalent of today's floating point units which aren't 
even separate chips anymore.

Seems the big cheese at FPS felt the market was in 64 bit computing and 
some of the not so loyal lieutenants thought faster performance was the 
bigger market (read that as seismic processing which is a synonym for 
oil exploration).  They spun off as Star Technlogies and the second 
fastest floating point machine in the world was made (a distant second 
to Cray I believe).

Of course, neither company could keep up with technology and both became 
dinosaurs trying to sell buggy whips to Ferrari owners.
