Well, you created the problem with your inconsistent system, so I'm quite sure I will have problems with your code. It's not a fallacy to point out where your coding style causes problems, because it is inconsistent. > I did not claim that it is, and I don't care what the VM does, if > there is one. The language definition says that when I call > foo.bla(...), foo is the current object during the execution of bla. You dodged the bla(...), where "this" is going to be the current object. There's no argument that you need a way to *also* make other objects current, because otherwise, there would be only one single object, which is a bit ridiculous. The default in Java and C++ is to use this as object, if there is no other object explicitely specified. And despite the many problems Java and C++ have, that *is* a reasonable default. > The current object is one way to reduce stack depth, yes. But not all > ways to reduce stack depth are a good idea. It's better to pass the object to the > selector and method on the data stack. And then have >o and o> compiled into the method and you need to take special care when you early exit the method? Since you *do* *use* >o and o> under a different name, telling me that >o and o> are evil is a bit silly. The point here is: Using Mini-OOF showed that not having a current object is such a big nuisance that you absolutely need one. Having one means you need a mechanism to set/restore it in a way that causes no such headaches as BASE and alike have (which have an API that does not include a way to restore). That's why the API is >o and o>, and the systems that implement it have a CATCH & THROW that knows about it. Having one also means that using it only for ivars and not for methods is inconsistent, and inconsistency causes problems. >>ATM, recognizers are still too experimental to suggest standardizing them, > > Yes. > > Actually, what one could do in current standard Forth is to define two > names when seeing a selector definition, one name for your calling > convention and one for mine. But given that you won't be using > objects2 anyway, and nobody else wants your calling convention, > putting that into objects2 would just be needless complication. That's a bit strong. At least I'm using my own OOP system for productive work, and I'm writing my own, because I've looked at others and can't use them productive. Many OOP systems have severe issues, which their author denies because he says "I don't need xxx", let xxx be polymorphism, or a current object, or scoping. Well, if you don't need, don't use it. But don't force others to get along with these restrictions. That's too silly. And I'm really fed up with it, because I always have to defend why I write my own OOP system, which has a number of features other systems lack, and I get told by people who never program in the OOP systems they maintain, that I should just live with these restrictions. Come on, this is too silly. I've looked at examples e.g. from Manfred Mahlow, and they would benefit quite a lot from my calling convention. The fact that people needs to be convinced to look at other systems is well-known, and the fact that they don't is why we have a gazillion of OOP systems. Apparently more OOP systems than applications that use them. The sad state of OOP system discussion is still that everyone has (not only) a strong not-invented-here problem, providing sealed solutions, instead of providing building blocks for people to use the system with the style they like. >o and o> is such a building block, and you use it, too. You just use it differently. That's ok, do as you like. But don't think your way is the only way, and everybody else just has to give in. IMHO your way is inconsistent and leads to more bugs. > I guess that taking the xt of methods (i.e., class-bount methods, not > selectors) is rare anyway. MINOS is full of callbacks, which are class-bound, but actually don't have a name (they are implemented as quotations). As such, there certainly is a related xt, and it's not a selector xt, it's a method xt. The quotations can be considered methods without selectors, as they are class-bound. > That depends on the design of the higher-order word and the methods. > E.g., if I write a MAP-WORDLIST ( ... xt -- ... ), xt will have a > stack effect like ( ... nt -- ... ), whereas for you it would have a > stack effect ( ... O: nt -- ... O: nt ) (and your "nt" would be called > "xt2" or so). Yes. For coexistence with higher order functions and such an OOP system, the higher order function isn't allowed to use the current object pointer. >>Yes, CATCH/THROW need to be aware of the current object pointer. It's >>probably sufficient as workaround to have >> >>: catch this >o catch o> ; > > There may be words that call CATCH internally and throw onwards (e.g., > BASE-EXECUTE) and are defined before the OO package is loaded, so for > option 2 and 3 all of these words have to be redefined in that way. Or you just put a bit pressure on the system implementer to provide a sane and consistent integration of >o and o>. One of the maintenance nightmares of current OOP packages is that they often need such a thing, but not with a consistent name, not used consistently, and without telling the system maintainer *how* he should provide it. Example: VFX has a currobj user variable, which is preserved in CATCH, implemented as part of MPE's effort to maintain one of their many OOP systems. When I ported BerndOOF to VFX, I asked Stephen, if he had such a thing, and the response was that currobj is that thing. Fine with me. As it is a user variable, the API is non-portable, so it's not really good enough. You can't make it a register if you have enough registers free to do so. > For SIZE@ or SIZE!, how do I know that what's coming out/going in is > an n, not a d or r or an object or something else? For SIZE, what > convention tells me anything about what it produces? If it was fsize@ or dsize@, would you ask that question? The convention is that single cell integers are the usual return values. If it is unusual, you tend to add some hints about it. While Microsoft's hungarian style was certainly overkill, Forth does indeed have some sort of light-weight hungarian notation as typical convention. Conventions aren't laws, but they make code more easy to maintain. > But if you want to use ":" in the names of selectors when using > objects.fs or objects2, go ahead. I think that Doug Hoffman and Alex > MacDonald are doing it because it was necessary in Neon and some of > the followups, not because it's so hard to remember to pass all the > parameters on the stack. IIRC, it always was just a convention. It however survived some syntax changes, so it could also be a legacy. -- Bernd Paysan "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself" http://bernd-paysan.de/
