OOP is, essentially, about encapsulation and late binding.  (Forget
classes, inheritance, etc, for a moment: they're not essential.)
Encapsulation means that when you access data in an object you do it
via the set of routines (aka methods) that object provides.  I'm sure
that you know what late binding means already.

The advantage of encapsulation is that you can change the
representation of data in an object without having to change any of
its users.  Also, it keeps all that access logic in one place.  The
advantage of late binding is that you can have different versions of
an object accessed identically: the user of an object calls its
methods and the right thing happens.

Alan Kay has talked about the first instance of this, which was around
1960.  NASA had some data on a tape, but that tape was in a special
binary format.  So, there was the problem of how to decode the data,
and how to document the format.  There was also the problem that when
the data format changed, you'd have to document that, and change the
programs that read it, and maybe have some sort of version number on
that tape.  A program reading the tape would have first to read the
version number, then call right one of a bunch of routines for that
data.  Somebody had a truly brilliant idea, one of the best in the
history of computer science: put the routines for decoding the data at
the start of the tape.  So, when a program needed to analyze the data,
it first loaded the routines at the start of the tape, and then called
those routines to read the data.
