Ok, just look at what the common case is: The common case is SELF something, either instance variable or method, because you factor a lot in Forth. The uncommon case is THING PRINT (yes, it's the uncommon case, though in typical badly factored languages like Java, it might be more common). In BerndOOF, the THING PRINT is solved by having THING do the >O and O> before and after PRINT (parsing word). The downside for this is that THING is no longer a simple address, but a complex, state-smart parsing word. Mini-OOF (the first one) has the current object on the top of stack, so THING PRINT works straight-forward, but since you have to juggle the current object for everything you do, it was way too cumbersome to use. The common case *isn't* THING PRINT. If it was, Mini-OOF would be perfect. A real-world example: Last week, I've written a Matroska parser. Matroska is a "binary XML" format, so the Forth way of doing this is to make each tag a word which, when executed, does the parsing of that particular field (or calls the recursive parser if the field contains other fields). A generic Matroska parser certainly shouldn't have hardcoded parsers for each fields; that's what an OOP system is for. So I created a Mini-OOF2 class (with current object) that contains a method for each tag, and there's a Gforth TABLE (a wordlist where the words don't have to be printable) which maps tags to methods. The parser then just goes through each tag, fetches the length, calls the method, and continues with the next field. Since Mini-OOF2 has a current object, this is all simple straight-forward Forth code without juggling an object through all these nested recursive parsers of the Matroska structure. The object is set on the top-level of the parsing, that's it. There are a few derived classes, one is generating MPEG Transport Stream out of Matroska, another one is displaying a human readable dump of the Matroska file. -- Bernd Paysan "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself" http://bernd-paysan.de/
