If you really want to understand it, you should use an eforth-like
approach of doing everything completely in Forth.  Ideally you should
use no non-Forth code at all (the lowest level primitives would use an
embedded assembler rather than an external one).  That seems like as
good an implementation challenge as any, for writing something in Forth.
Writing a Forth in a non-Forth language (like Rod is doing) seems like a
sterile exercise to me, unless you have a specific application (such as
a cross compiler) in mind.

Fig-forth and some incarnations of eforth start from an external
assembler but I think Forth purists frown on this.  I remember Jeff Fox
wrote a rant about it.
