In article <4f6ce1b5$0$6869$e4fe514c@news2.news.xs4all.nl>, Hans Bezemer <the.beez.speaks@gmail.com> wrote: >Elizabeth D. Especially the trick of parsing a words name by TRAVERSE -ing from high bit to high bit. I remember in the early days of tForth that we did a cleanup. The mess we got was inherited from some Forth examples that went essentially back to figForth. Nowadays we are aware that we need an abstraction like a "name field address" or "dictionary entry address" to keep the information about a Forth word straight. The mindset of a figforth was essentially N addresses (data field, link field ..) and N^2+1 ways to get from here to there. (The 1 is for going to the next word.) There were other irritating things, like having some assembler words with too many parameters that were used to build high level words. This however had a reason/excuse . Using assembler was needed for speed, but you don't want too many assembler words. <SNIP> >Hans Bezemer > Groetjes Albert -- -- Albert van der Horst, UTRECHT,THE NETHERLANDS Economic growth -- being exponential -- ultimately falters. albert@spe&ar&c.xs4all.nl &=n http://home.hccnet.nl/a.w.m.van.der.horst
