Writing a Forth in a non-Forth language (like Rod is doing) seems like a sterile exercise to me, unless you have a specific application (such as a cross compiler) in mind. Fig-forth and some incarnations of eforth start from an external assembler but I think Forth purists frown on this. I remember Jeff Fox wrote a rant about it.
